You cut your calories. You lost weight. It was working.
And then it stopped.

You didn’t change anything. You didn’t cheat. You didn’t get lazy. But the scale locked in place and nothing you do seems to move it.

This is metabolic adaptation, and it’s exactly what your body is designed to do when it senses prolonged scarcity.

Here’s what happens behind the scenes when you’ve been in a calorie deficit for too long: Your body produces more of the hormone that drives hunger, making you think about food more often and more intensely.

At the same time, it produces less of the hormone that tells you you’ve had enough, so meals feel less satisfying even when the portion hasn’t changed.

Your metabolism slows down. You burn fewer calories at rest.
Your stress hormones climb, which promotes fat storage, especially around the midsection, and makes it harder to sleep, which compounds the metabolic slowdown further.

The answer to a plateau is almost never “eat less and push harder.” That’s the approach that created the adaptation in the first place. The answer is usually strategic: a temporary increase in calories, a shift in training stimulus, addressing sleep and stress, or evaluating whether hormones or inflammation are compounding the problem.
