Central Maryland AHEC brought high school students to McDaniel College for a Bridges to
Healthcare Careers event as part of Immersion Weekend. Students explored nursing,
occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, biology, and social work through hands-on sessions. They also learned about academic pathways into the health professions and had the opportunity to ask faculty questions about education and careers.

AHEC Scholars gathered for a separate two-day experience focused on understanding and
responding to community needs. Their weekend included a poverty simulation, a session on trauma-informed care, and a small-group case study. Together, the activities gave Scholars time to learn from one another and consider how life experiences can shape a person’s health and care.

What does team-based care really look like?

For Asha Kamath, a social work student at the University of Maryland Baltimore and Central Maryland Area Health Education Center AHEC Scholar, the answer came through the AHEC Scholars program, where she gained firsthand experience working alongside professionals from multiple healthcare disciplines.

During an interdisciplinary clinical placement, Asha worked alongside physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to help patients navigate challenges both inside and outside the exam room.

As Asha explains, "That experience gave me a front-row seat to how care actually happens, not the version you read about in textbooks or see on The Pitt, but the version where every discipline has to work together in real time for real people."

The AHEC Scholars program prepares the next generation of healthcare professionals to communicate across disciplines, strengthen care coordination, and deliver patient-centered care.
