Before last month's CoFSA summit officially opened, Nova participants experienced Bhutan's food systems firsthand.
Nova Scholar Hannah Gosnell and her daughter, Phelix Schneider, hiked to Tiger's Nest, one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist tradition. Invited Faculty Nadine Clopton visited Mountain Hazelnuts, an agroforestry initiative supporting more than 1,000 smallholder farming households across the country. She also shared a meal of seasonal vegetables and Bhutanese red rice with young monks at a mountaintop monastic school. Dr. Matías Javier Hargreaves Méndez spent the day with a women-led dairy cooperative.
Three different experiences, one shared lesson: food systems are inseparable from the land, culture, spirituality, and communities that sustain them. This hands-on learning stays with us, continuing to shape how we approach health, well-being, and flourishing.
