I have been thinking about what it actually means to come home to yourself.
Not metaphorically.
In your body.
In your environment.
In the small details of your life.
Scent belongs in that conversation.
A scent can become connected to emotion, memory, preference, place and experience. Those connections are deeply personal.
As an aromatherapist, whenever I’ve worked with clients, I tend to ask these questions after they’ve been introduced to a scent:
What do you notice?
What becomes activated in your body when you smell [insert scent]?
What brings a memory back before you have even found the words for it?
What feels familiar?
What feels pleasurable?
What feels like you?
This is part of what I mean by Sensory Identity.
Introducing Scentscape, the sensory component of Becoming Soula.
Scentscape is an exploration of scent through preference, memory, association, personal meaning, ritual and reflection.
Not because a bottle of essential oil can fix your life.
Because becoming more fluent in yourself can include paying attention to what you experience through your senses.
Sometimes coming home to yourself is a decision.
Sometimes it is a boundary.
Sometimes it is movement, rest, food, pleasure or the story you are finally ready to tell differently.
Sometimes, you open a bottle, inhale, and notice:
There I am.
Scent can serve as a power resensitization tool and is something I want everyone to experience.
I can’t wait to share more.
