An Important Update from Maryland Health Care For All!

Maryland's first-in-the-nation Prescription Drug Affordability Board continues its historic progress, voting to establish an upper payment limit on Ozempic for State and local government entities.

This week, Maryland's Prescription Drug Affordability Board voted to move forward on establishing an upper payment limit for the blockbuster diabetes drug Ozempic for state and local government entities. The PDAB estimates that this action could save State and local governments $5.8 million each year, with savings growing to up to $164 million when the PDAB expands upper payment limits (https://ow.ly/H3za50Z2V03) to help all Marylanders.

Importantly, this week's action marks the second upper payment limit approved by the PDAB, a critical milestone needed to expand the upper payment limit authority to the commercial market in Maryland. With upper payment limits now established for both Jardiance and Ozempic and set to go into effect on January 1, 2027, the PDAB is expected to begin acting in 2028 to set upper payment limits on high-cost drugs purchased by all Marylanders.

We are thrilled that the PDAB is taking action to bring real relief to strained state and local government budgets, and we are excited that the PDAB will soon be empowered to bring down costs for all Marylanders.

Our own Catherine Kirk Robins joined WMAR along with Ben Schmitt of the Howard County Education Association to discuss the exciting progress Maryland's Prescription Drug Affordability Board has made with their recent upper payment limit decision on Ozempic. Our state and local governments are set to see impressive savings in the coming year, with those savings growing to $164 million annually when the expanded upper payment limit authority goes into effect!

Maryland capped Ozempic costs for government employees, with a statewide limit set for 2028 that could save $164 million a year.
