Proposed 2027 CMS changes could make it harder for dermatology practices to provide timely care to Medicare patients. This may lead to longer wait times and reduced access to important services such as skin cancer screenings, biopsies, surgery, and treatment of skin cancer.

Please use the link in this post to contact Congress and ask them to protect access to dermatologic care. Your voice can make a difference.

Mohs Surgery Monday!

This patient underwent Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer from the nose. Mohs surgery examines the tissue layer by layer during the procedure, allowing the surgeon to confirm that the cancer has been fully removed while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

The before-and-after photos show the surgical site before, during and after suturing, one week post-op and one year post-op.

Mohs Surgery Monday 👂✨

A basal cell carcinoma on the ear, treated with Mohs surgery — shown here at the 3-month follow-up.

The ears receive years of cumulative sun exposure and are a common location for skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma. Reconstructing this area requires careful planning to preserve the ear’s natural shape and maintain a smooth, normal rim.

At Northern Maine Skin Cancer Center, we work with each patient to choose the treatment that best fits their diagnosis, needs, and personal goals.

**Mohs Surgery Monday**

This patient’s photos show the journey of a skin cancer on the ear — from the time of diagnosis, to the day of Mohs surgery, to the healing result at **less than 6 weeks post-op**.

The ear can be a challenging area to treat because of its shape, thin skin, cartilage, and cosmetic importance. Mohs surgery allows us to carefully remove the skin cancer while checking the tissue under the microscope the same day, helping preserve as much healthy tissue as possible.

These photos are a great reminder that early post-operative healing can already show significant improvement, while scars continue to soften and mature over several months.

Every case is different, but our goal is always complete cancer removal with the best possible functional and cosmetic outcome.

Mohs surgery is a precise technique that removes skin cancer layer by layer while checking the tissue under the microscope the same day. This allows us to confirm the cancer is fully removed while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Healing after surgery is a process, and scars continue to improve over time. Even at less than 3 months, this result shows how well surgical sites can heal with proper reconstruction, wound care, and follow-up.

Every patient and every skin cancer is different, but our goal is always the same: complete cancer removal with the best possible functional and cosmetic outcome.

This week, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the Mohs surgery process — including before, during, and after photos from one of our skin cancer patients.

Mohs surgery allows us to remove skin cancer layer by layer while examining the tissue under the microscope the same day. This helps us confirm the cancer is fully removed while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.

The photos also show how wounds can look immediately after surgery and during the healing process. While the surgical day can look intense, the body’s ability to heal is remarkable.
