Nobody talks about this part of breastfeeding.😩

You’re feeding on demand.
Waking up all night.
Doing everything you can…

And then you hear: “slow weight gain.”

Suddenly, you start questioning everything.

Your body.
Your milk.
Every single feed.

Because breastfeeding isn’t just feeding your baby, it’s wondering if you’re doing enough.

But slow weight gain does not mean you’re failing.

Some babies grow at their own pace.
Some journeys just look different.

And if you’re in this season right now, I hope you know you’re not alone. 🤍

Did anyone else struggle with the anxiety that came with weight checks?

🌸 Spring into Support 🌸

This spring, Michigan Breastfeeding Network is reflecting on what it truly means to nourish a community.

For many families, the human milk feeding journey is full of challenges—and support isn’t always accessible. Barriers like cost, location, and systemic inequities mean too many parents go without the care they deserve.

But together, we can change that.

🌱 Become a monthly donor and provide consistent, equitable support—every single month.

Your ongoing gift helps to:
• Expand access to lactation support in underserved communities
• Provide culturally competent care
• Ensure no parent has to navigate feeding challenges alone

This season, we invite you to Spring into Support and help nourish the future.

Here are some tips for establishing and maintaining a good milk supply. However, this information should not take the place of an individual appt with a lactation specialist. Everyone’s health history is a little different!

🔷From day 1: make sure that baby is latched on deeply. Remember - it’s “breastfeeding”, not “nipple feeding” ;-). The goal is to get as much breast tissue in baby’s mouth as possible. If you are not sure if baby is latching well, or feel pain during a feeding, reach out for help.

🔷Watch for baby’s early hunger cues and nurse frequently, and avoid schedules. Let baby fully drain one side before switching to the other.

🔷Aim to offer both breasts at each feeding. This helps stimulate production more equally. If baby is too full to take the second side, it’s ok. Just start there for the next feeding.

🔷Do not supplement your baby with formula unless it is medically necessary. If supplementation is temporarily needed, you can give your own expressed milk to baby with a cup, syringe, or supplemental system (tube at breast). You don’t have to be limited to a bottle. There is also donor milk.

🔷Pay attention to your own needs: rest, sufficient fluids and nutrient intake, and asking for help when you need it. Taking care of yourself and minimizing stress will help increase your supply and improve your general sense of well-being.

Happy IBCLC Day! 🤱🏽💗

Today, we celebrate and recognize the critical role of IBCLCs in WIC.
IBCLCs bring advanced clinical expertise to the WIC program.

IBCLCs:
✅ Support families experiencing complex feeding challenges
✅ Improve breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity, and duration
✅ Mentor peer counselors
✅ Strengthen workforce stability
✅ Contribute to measurable maternal and infant health outcomes

As WIC modernizes and works to strengthen participation and retention, IBCLCs are not optional- they are essential.

Families, we are excited to share that our community has support for Breastfeeding & Lactation available!

Join the Community Breastfeeding Collaborative the third Saturday of each month for supportive meet-ups for families at every stage of their feeding journey. Certified Lactation Counselors will share helpful educational topics, and there will be plenty of time for open, honest conversation.

This is a wonderful opportunity to connect, ask questions, and freely discuss concerns, struggles, tips, and triumphs in a nurturing, judgment-free environment.

There is no need to feel alone — support is here! 💛

We talk endlessly about “breast is best” for babies.

But no one talks about the part where your body protects YOU too.

Less cancer.
Less diabetes.
Lower heart disease risk.

And yet somehow we’re told it’s “just feeding.”

But, women truly deserve full information.
Not watered-down versions, to make other feel more comfortable…

Did you know breastfeeding lowered long term disease risk for mothers?

They say your baby is “using you.”
As if comfort is manipulation.
As if closeness is a flaw.
Pacifiers didn’t come first.
Mothers did.
Sucking, comfort, regulation, connection —
that’s biology, not bad habits.
If this makes someone uncomfortable,
good. It should.
👇 Tell me
What’s the worst thing someone said to you about breastfeeding?

Yep 🤭❤️🩷
