✨MEDICATION SPOTLIGHT: Vraylar

Not every mental health medication is one size fits all. Sometimes, the right treatment is about targeting the specific symptoms getting in the way of daily life.

Vraylar (cariprazine) is an atypical antipsychotic that may be prescribed for:
💫 Bipolar I disorder
💫 Schizophrenia
💫 Adjunct treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (used with an antidepressant)

Some patients report improvement in:
⭐️ Mood swings
⭐️ Irritability
⭐️ Racing thoughts
⭐️ Motivation & energy
⭐️ Depression symptoms that haven’t fully responded to antidepressants alone

A few things to know:
⭐️ It can take several weeks to notice full benefit
⭐️ Some people experience restlessness or nausea early on
⭐️ Dosing is typically started low and adjusted gradually
⭐️ Like all psychiatric medications, monitoring and follow-up matter

Mental health treatment should be individualized: what works well for one person may not for another, and medication is only one piece of overall care.

✨Questions about whether your current treatment is working? A conversation with a qualified psychiatric provider can help explore options safely.

⭐️ Excited to share that Ron McCaslin, PMHNP-BC, is now partnering with Mind-Body Pediatric Psychiatry to help expand access to psychiatric care for children and adolescents.

This collaboration allows for additional appointment availability, extended hours for families, and the opportunity to support even more kiddos in our community — while continuing his private practice and ongoing work with current patients.

Mental health care for children works best when access is thoughtful, collaborative, and family-centered, and this partnership is a meaningful step toward that mission.

More support. More access. Same heart behind the care 💛

This Memorial Day, we honor the service members who never made it home, and we also hold space for the veterans who did, but continue carrying the invisible weight of what they experienced.

Mental health matters long after the uniform comes off. PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, survivor’s guilt, substance use, difficulty reconnecting with loved ones, and the loss of identity after service are realities many veterans quietly navigate every day.

Checking in on veterans shouldn’t happen only on holidays. Sometimes support looks like therapy, medication, community, purpose, routine, or simply having someone willing to listen without judgment.

To the veterans carrying more than people can see: your experiences matter, your struggles are valid, and asking for help is not weakness, but strength.

This Memorial Day: remember the fallen, support the living 🇺🇸

Back in office today, 5/20!

The past few weeks were spent answering a different kind of call to serve. Thank you for the patience, understanding, and support while away 🇺🇸

We’re back, catching up, and looking forward to continuing your care!

Today is Bereaved Mother’s Day

A day that exists because so many mothers carry love and loss at the same time, and too often, carry it quietly. If you’ve experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss, or the loss of a child at any age…you are still their mother, and today is for you 🤍

That identity doesn’t disappear.
It just becomes something the world doesn’t always know how to hold with you.

Maternal mental health isn’t only about the postpartum period. It also includes the grief, trauma, and ongoing emotional weight that can come with losing a child. The kind of grief that doesn’t follow timelines. The kind that shows up in ordinary moments. The kind that can feel invisible, but never insignificant.

If today is heavy, you’re not alone in that. And if you know a bereaved mother, say their child’s name 🤍

On April 29, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Auvelity (dextromethorphan/bupropion) for treating agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia in adults, and that. Is. Huge.

Agitation in Alzheimer’s isn’t just restlessness. It can show up as pacing, irritability, emotional outbursts, or even aggression, and it’s often one of the hardest symptoms for both patients and caregivers to navigate.

What stands out here is that Auvelity gives us a non-antipsychotic option. That matters, especially when we think about the risks that can come with antipsychotics in this population. Its mechanism is a little different too, working through NMDA and sigma-1 pathways alongside dopamine and norepinephrine support, which may help target some of the underlying drivers of agitation.

Seeing theories like these evolving into real solutions is one of my favorite parts of my job. It’s not a magic fix, and it won’t replace the importance of structure, environment, and caregiver support. But it does give us another useful option when those pieces aren’t enough on their own.

If you’re seeing increasing agitation in someone with Alzheimer’s, this is worth a conversation with your provider.

There’s a version of you that looks like you’re doing fine, but it takes more effort than it should.

In mental health, we sometimes call this “high-functioning” anxiety or depression. While not a diagnosis, it is a pattern. You’re getting through your day, meeting expectations, showing up for others; while quietly dealing with things like mental exhaustion, irritability, poor sleep, or feeling disconnected yourself. Because you’re still functioning, it often gets overlooked by others and by yourself. But needing more effort than usual to get through your day is still a signal.

Mental health care isn’t only for crisis. It’s also for when:
• your baseline doesn’t feel like you anymore
• things feel heavier than they used to
• you’re running on effort instead of energy

You don’t have to wait for things to fall apart to take action. You don’t wait for a boat to sink to fix it, you fix the problem when it’s more manageable💙

Not everything you carry is visible, and not everything you’re managing is obvious to the people around you. This month isn’t about perfect routines or trying to “fix” yourself, it’s about paying attention, honestly and without judgment.

Maybe that looks like finally admitting something isn’t working, asking questions about your medications, setting a boundary you’ve been avoiding, or simply noticing how you’ve actually been feeling. Mental health care isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s nuanced, personal, and allowed to take time.

If you’ve been pushing things off, consider this your quiet nudge 🧠

Okay so we actually love this sloth Tonie. It’s super calm, no loud noises, no chaos, just a really steady, gentle voice. It’s the kind of thing kids will actually sit and listen to without getting more wound up, which is very rare (here at least!)

From a mental health standpoint, it’s great for slowing things down. Good for transitions, quiet time, or bedtime. Especially for kids who get overstimulated easily or have a hard time settling down. Today, it’s fantastic for the storm. A good distraction from the thunder for little ones. It’s not flashy or super exciting, but honestly that’s why it works. It just feels grounding and calm when their minds don’t. And, jungles and oceans? ✅✅

10/10 would keep this one in the rotation 🦥💛 Link is now added to the LinkTree if you want to add it to your own collection

A quick mental health note for today in particular, because this part doesn’t get talked about enough: Cannabis isn’t neutral for everyone.

Depending on the person, it can:
• Increase anxiety or panic
• Worsen depression or motivation
• Trigger paranoia or psychosis (especially if there’s a history)
• Impact focus, memory, and sleep quality

And ➡️➡️➡️ it can interact with psychiatric medications, including:

• SSRIs (like sertraline, fluoxetine)
• SNRIs (like venlafaxine, duloxetine)
• bupropion
• Stimulants (like amphetamine salts, lisdexamfetamine)
• Mood stabilizers (like lamotrigine, lithium)
• Antipsychotics (like quetiapine, aripiprazole)
• Benzodiazepines (like clonazepam)
• Beta blockers (like propranolol)

This can show up as:
• Increased side effects
• Reduced medication effectiveness
• More mood or anxiety instability

All that to say, legal doesn’t always mean consequence-free, for you or your body ➡️ It can impact prescribing decisions or treatment planning. This doesn’t mean “never” but it does mean it’s worth an honest conversation with your provider so we can create the safest and most effective care plan for you as a whole🤍
