Farming with Friends Will Close September 30, But Our Work Will Continue 🌱

After much thought and careful planning, the Board of Farming with Friends has made the difficult decision to dissolve our nonprofit organization. Our final day of operations will be September 30, 2026.

While Farming with Friends as an organization is coming to an end, the work we built together is not!

We have spent the past several months thinking carefully about what comes next and how we can preserve the things that matter most: meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities, the farm community we have built, and the partnerships that have made this work possible.

Beginning October 1, Rhythm and Reach, an Ohio-certified developmental disability service provider, will carry much of this work forward. Heads Up Flowers, a business enterprise of Rhythm and Reach, will take over agricultural programming at the Old Trail School Farm, creating opportunities for meaningful work, skill-building, and connection. Most of our current participants will move forward with us into this new chapter, through farm employment and programming, as well as community wellness experiences.

Our partnership with Crown Point Ecology Center will also help preserve important parts of Farming with Friends, including inclusive volunteer opportunities and our annual All Abilities Fall Fest (10/3 - save the date!).

We are carrying the mission forward financially, too. As part of our dissolution, our remaining assets will be dedicated to continued farm operations at Old Trail School and to establishing the Farming with Friends Legacy Fund at Crown Point Ecology Center. The resources our community entrusted to us will continue doing what they were intended to do: creating opportunities for people of all abilities to grow, contribute, and belong.

This decision was not made because we stopped believing in our mission. Quite the opposite. We chose to make this transition while Farming with Friends still had the resources, relationships, and community support to ensure that what we created could live beyond our organization.

And what a community we created together!

You planted and harvested. You hauled compost and pulled weeds. You learned new skills and taught them to someone else. You welcomed people who needed a place to belong. You donated, volunteered, partnered, cheered us on, bought our produce and flowers, attended our events, and believed that people of all abilities should have meaningful opportunities to work and grow together.

Because of you, Farming with Friends became much more than a farm.

Want to stay involved? There will still be plenty of ways to be part of what comes next. You can support Heads Up Flowers and the continued work at the Old Trail School Farm, volunteer through Crown Point Ecology Center, participate in and support the All Abilities Fall Fest, and contribute to the Farming with Friends Legacy Fund as it grows. Stay tuned!

There is a lot to celebrate, and even more to carry forward. The organization may be coming to an end, but the community and the work are not. We will keep growing, keep building community, and keep farming with friends, old and new.

Thank you for growing with us, believing in us, and helping us build something worth carrying forward.

Empowering All Abilities to Grow Together. Always. 🌱

Cantaloupe Talk 🍈

We get kitchen scraps from the Old Trail School dining hall to compost, and there are always plenty of cantaloupe rinds and seeds in the mix. This year, we had so many cantaloupe seedlings popping up in our beds that they were practically weeds.

Just for fun, we let a few grow. And they did!

Yesterday was a rough one at the farm. Nothing in particular, just one of those days when something seems to be in the air and everyone is feeling it.

Then we realized one of our surprise cantaloupes was ripe.

So we decided it was time for a Cantaloupe Talk.

Everyone gathered around as Garrett cut into it, revealing a beautiful, fragrant melon. We each grabbed a slice, sat together, and talked about life, work, friendship, and whatever else needed talking about.

Sometimes the best thing you can grow on a farm isn't something you planned to plant.

Every team needs an occasional Cantaloupe Talk! πŸˆπŸ’š

Today was one of those days where you could practically wear the air. Hot, muggy, sticky, and generally disrespectful. And yet, Karla and Krista showed up, as they always do, ready to work.

By the end of the day, they were absolutely filthy. Not a little dirt under the fingernails. Full-on, β€œDid you two roll around in the field?” dirty. πŸ˜‚

And we love this picture because it captures so much of what we love about these two. They work hard. They laugh a lot. They never seem bothered by the mess. And week after week, they show up for us and do whatever needs to be done.

Regular volunteers like Karla and Krista are such a huge part of Farming with Friends. Somewhere along the way, they stopped feeling like volunteers and just became part of the farm family.

We are so incredibly grateful for both of you. And also, please go take a shower. ❀️

πŸ‰ Surprise watermelon harvest! πŸ‰

In farming, you can make all the plans you want, but ultimately Mother Nature calls the shots.

Harvesting watermelons wasn't on today's agenda, but during our morning rounds we noticed that two of them had split. With more rain in the forecast, we knew we couldn't wait. When ripe watermelons absorb too much water, they're likely to split, so it was time to harvest the entire crop.

It was all hands on deck! Thankfully, our friends from Teammates Center L.L.C and CRU were on site and jumped right in alongside our staff and volunteers. Together, we harvested more than 35 beautiful watermelons!

We shared them with our crew and friends, then sold many of the rest to fellow farmers to take to market. It wasn't the day we planned, but it turned into one we'll remember for a long time.

That's farming. Flexible, unpredictable, and always full of surprises. πŸ‰πŸ’š

Hi Friends,

We have made the tough decision to cancel Bubbles & Bouquets, originally scheduled for Saturday, August 22 at the Old Trail Farm.

We were looking forward to spending an afternoon with you creating beautiful flower bouquets, enjoying bubbly beverages, and celebrating the beauty of the farm together. Unfortunately, we've decided that we aren't able to deliver the experience we envisioned, so we've chosen to cancel the event rather than move forward with something that falls short of our expectations.

We sincerely appreciate everyone who expressed interest and support, and we hope you'll join us at our All Abilities Fall Fest on Saturday, October 3, where we'll continue celebrating community, inclusion, and the harvest season. (https://farmingwithfriends.org/events/)

Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of Farming with Friends!

Why does Ginnette look so upset?

Because farming is messy.

This week we discovered a to***co hornworm infestation in our high tunnel tomatoes. These giant caterpillars can strip a tomato plant surprisingly fast, so it was time for some emergency pest management.

Then we found THE hornworm. About 5 inches long. Fat. Very, very juicy.

Krista employed our preferred pest control method: one well-placed stomp.

Mission accomplished.

However...

The resulting explosion splattered hornworm guts all over Ginnette's shirt. And FACE! So if she looks less than thrilled in this photo, you can understand why.

Farming isn't always picture-perfect. Sometimes it's sweat, dirt, bug battles, and stories you'll be telling for years.

Check the comments for a close-up of the culprit... if you dare. πŸ›πŸ…

Some people leave a legacy that continues to bring people together long after they're gone. Lisa Durbin was one of those people.

We are incredibly grateful to BNI-NE Ohio for honoring Lisa's memory through the Lisa Durbin Memorial Walk & Talk on July 1. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who participated and donated, $1,265 was raised to support Farming with Friends!

Lisa believed in the power of community, connection, and helping others. We are deeply honored that her legacy continues by supporting opportunities for individuals with disabilities to learn, work, and thrive on our farm.

Thank you to everyone at BNI Northeast Ohio for keeping Lisa's spirit of generosity alive. We are truly grateful for your support. πŸ’šπŸŒ±
