A law passed last November that clears most of this category off shelves. It never got its own vote. It rode the bill that reopened the government. Alcohol producers pushed for it, alcohol distributors pushed against it, and the money on both sides when from lopsided to nearly even in a year. Saturday, half of Congress voted to push the deadline back 29 days.

The short version? The Senate voted to push the ban from November 12 to December 11. Twenty-nine more days. That part’s real, the rest isn’t finished.

Day 5. Everyone is circling November. The date that actually decides this is September 30.

Most of us are probably familiar with that catchy “I’m Just a Bill” tune from Schoolhouse Rock — here’s a refresher of what it covers in five steps. A bill gets written, a committee approves it, the House votes, the Senate does all of the same, the President signs.

We are on step one of five. There are 18 working days.

One more number worth knowing. In April, the House passed a farm bill 224 to 200 with amendments to fix this problem available and left every one of them out. That’s not a guess about what Congress might do. That’s what it already did.

Day 4. The receipts, sorted by what each group actually said instead of what industry they belong to.

That sorting step is why our number looks different from the ones going around. Put the alcohol wholesalers in the same column as the brewers and you get a figure that is arithmetically correct and means nothing because they are on opposite sides of this.

Last year one side had a three to one advantage. This year it is closer to four to three.

Day 3. The easy version of this story is that big alcohol is coming for h**p. That is not what the filings say.

The companies that make beer and liquor asked Congress to restrict these products. The wholesalers who deliver them and the retailers who sell them asked Congress to keep them legal. In writing, on the record, both of them, in the same season.

We are posting this because if you are going to be angry about something, it should be something accurate.

Day 2. If you’re wondering how something this big passed without you hearing about it, the answer is simpler than you would think. It never got its own vote.

The language was inside the bill that reopened the government during the longest shutdown in American history. Voting against it meant keeping the government closed.

No hearing on h**p. No debate on h**p. A one-year delay, so the effects landed a year later, which is now.

We’re not assigning anyone motives here. We are listing who wrote which letter and what business they are in. All of it is public.

Most people in this category have sat through scares before. Caps, age limits, state rules. So when someone says ban, it is easy to scroll past.

This one already passed. It was signed last November, inside the bill that reopened the government, with a one year delay attached. That year ends in November.

Congress has 18 working days on the calendar to change it. They are home in their districts right now, which is the only reason we are posting this in August instead of September.
