She had to leave the only home she had ever known… but she never forgot the voice that raised her. 🐼💔
Fu Bao was born in South Korea in 2020.
From the time she was tiny, one familiar person was always there, zookeeper Kang Cheol-won, the man everyone lovingly came to know as her “Panda Grandpa.”
He watched her take her first steps.
He fed her, played with her, talked to her, protected her, and watched a tiny panda slowly become a personality loved by millions.
But there was one thing even Grandpa couldn’t change.
Fu Bao had to leave Korea and begin a new life in China.
On the rainy day of her departure, thousands came to say goodbye.
And Grandpa had his own goodbye to give.
He stood before the crowd and read a letter to the little panda he had cared for since birth, telling her that no matter how many years passed, she would always be their baby panda.
What made that moment even harder was something many people didn’t know.
Grandpa had lost his own mother just one day earlier.
He was carrying his own grief, yet he still chose to accompany Fu Bao on her journey to China so she wouldn’t have to make that enormous transition without someone familiar beside her.
Then came another goodbye.
China became Fu Bao’s new home. Grandpa returned to Korea.
Different countries.
Different lives.
Months apart.
But some bonds don’t disappear just because there are thousands of miles between them.
About three months later, Grandpa traveled to China to see her again.
He stood near her enclosure and called out to her.
That familiar voice.
The same voice she had heard since she was a cub.
And Fu Bao came closer.
For everyone watching, it was more than a keeper visiting a panda.
It felt like a little girl recognizing Grandpa after being away from home. 🥺🐼
Maybe that’s why this tiny panda holding tightly onto a piece of bamboo feels so meaningful.
Because sometimes we hold on to the people, places, and memories we love, even when life takes us somewhere completely new.
Distance can change where we live.
Time can change our lives.
But real love has a strange way of remembering. ❤️
