Alice Santurri was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2015 after doctors found the disease had already spread to her spine. Instead of the mastectomy and chemotherapy she expected, doctors told her they would focus on quality of life over quantity. Eleven years later, she's created something extraordinary.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Team Juma at Race for the Place, The Gathering Place’s annual 5K and 1-mile walk held on National Cancer Survivors Day.

Created in memory of beloved Shaker Heights artist, mother and local business owner Erica Weiss, Team Juma has become one of the event’s most enduring and impactful teams

What began that day as a way to honor Erica’s life has since become a decade-long tradition of healing, connection, and hope. Team Juma has continued to show up year after year, helping ensure individuals and families impacted by cancer continue receiving free emotional support, programs, and community care.

For the past 18 years, the Blue Butterflies Team has been helping support the mission of The Gathering Place.
With her family, friends, co-workers, and volunteers, Susan and the Blue Butterflies Team have been helping ensure no one has to face cancer alone.
