When someone asked why I no longer speak to a certain person, I gave an honest answer. Their response? “Why don’t you be the bigger person and reach out?”

People often confuse being the bigger person with constantly reopening old wounds, hoping for a different outcome. But real growth means knowing when to step back. It means recognizing when a relationship has become toxic, when conversations lead nowhere, and choosing peace over endless cycles of frustration.

Reaching out over and over, only to be met with the same disrespect, broken trust, or unresolved issues, is draining. Being the bigger person doesn’t mean tolerating mistreatment—it means prioritizing your own well being. It’s okay to leave behind relationships that no longer serve you, to protect your peace, and to love people from a distance when closeness only brings chaos. Some chapters don’t need revisiting and some doors are meant to stay closed.

Me: I’ve got 2 weeks until my hair appointment. I’m sooo getting it cut into a bob.

Higher Self: no. no. no. Ease up a bit. Too short.

Me: No, that’ll be too short. Move slow. No swift or too spontaneous action. I’ll start at the shoulders & won’t go past my neckline.

Higher Self: (sigh of relief). Yessssssss girl. That’s it. You’re listening. You hear me. You’re trusting and following. Good job.

3 days later.

Me: ugh! All this hair is too much. I’m so ready to just cut it all off right now.
I’ll just take an inch off the length, no one will even notice.
An inch won’t make any difference, two inches!!!

Higher Self: With what scissors. Your hair cutting scissors are dull, that leaves thinning sheers, for THINNING.

Me: Have you not noticed how much hair I have? I could use the thinning sheers & kill to birds with one stone.

Higher Self: (cracking up) Yea and walking around like you got into a fight with electric garden sheers.

Me: Maybe. But maybe not.

Higher Self: Just be patient & wait.

Me: I’m just going to be patient and wait for my hair appointment.

Higher Self: Yes! There you go. You’re listening. You’re trusting and following. Piece of cake.

Me: I’ll bet my utility scissors are sharp enough. It’s only an inch or two, no one will even notice.
