Typical risk factors for osteoporosis include a small body frame, smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor nutrition. However, researchers have identified another often unnoticed factor.

Depression.

A large research review published in the National Institutes of Health database found that individuals with depression consistently showed lower bone mineral density, especially in the spine and femur. In fact, 25 out of 33 studies examined demonstrated this inverse relationship.

Additional studies have reinforced this link, showing that depression is connected to reduced bone density and a higher risk of fractures, along with inflammatory and hormonal changes that can gradually weaken the body.
