Why are we still pretending nostril screws, nose bones, and L-bends are the best option for nostril piercings? 👀

Years ago, they were one of the only options available for nostril piercings. Today, we have implant-grade titanium flatback jewelry that is far more comfortable and secure.

Not only are nostril screws, nose bones, and L-bends more likely to get snagged and pulled out, but they’re also commonly made from stainless steel or unidentified “mystery metals.” While some people tolerate these materials just fine, others can experience irritation or sensitivity—especially in a fresh piercing. Implant-grade titanium is biocompatible, nickel-free, and considered the gold standard for new piercings.

Flatbacks sit comfortably inside your nose, are less likely to catch on towels, clothing, or blankets, and greatly reduce the chances of your jewelry being accidentally ripped out.

I had the best time with this fun group of sisters and friends who came in together for matching piercings. There’s something special about sharing the experience with people who will cheer you on, hold your hand, and make you laugh through it all!

Septum piercings should only be placed through the “sweet spot” — the thin tissue just beneath the cartilage. A properly placed septum piercing should NOT go through cartilage.

One of the biggest myths I hear is that septum piercings are supposed to make a loud crunching sound. They aren’t. If you hear or feel a crunch during the piercing, that’s a sign the needle likely went through cartilage instead of the sweet spot.

Proper anatomy checks and correct placement make all the difference when it comes to comfort, healing, and the overall look of your piercing. Not everyone has the anatomy for a septum piercing, and that’s okay! A good piercer will always prioritize your safety over making a sale.
