Most people drink water throughout the day and still walk around chronically dehydrated. The reason is usually not how much they're drinking — it's whether that water is actually reaching their cells.
Intracellular hydration is the process by which water moves into the cell itself, where the majority of the body's chemistry happens. It requires a functioning electrolyte balance — specifically adequate sodium, potassium, and magnesium — to create the osmotic pull that draws water across the cell membrane. When electrolytes are depleted, water circulates but doesn't absorb at the cellular level. You can drink all day and still be running dry where it counts.
This matters more than most people realize. The brain is approximately 75% water. The spinal discs are largely water-dependent for their cushioning function. Nerve conduction, muscle contraction, joint lubrication, and immune response all depend on cells that are properly hydrated. When intracellular hydration is consistently low, the effects show up as fatigue that sleep doesn't resolve, brain fog, headaches, muscle cramps, poor recovery, and mood instability — none of which are obviously connected to hydration, which is why the connection gets missed.
Plain water replaces volume. Electrolytes restore function. They're not the same thing, and most sports drinks on the market are too high in sugar and too low in the minerals that actually matter.
