W-SITTING vs. SIDE-SITTING
Why do babies and toddlers w-sit?
👶 In short, because it’s easier, requiring less active muscle use.
Why don’t we want them to w-sit? There are a few reasons, including:
👎 It limits their development of core strength
👎 It can lead to structural and postural abnormalities in their legs
👎 It reduces their trunk rotation during seated play, impacting crawling development and future balance in standing.
Why is side-sitting better?
👍 It helps build core strength
👍 It does not put excessive strain on the hips and knees
👍 It allows for easier transitions into and out of hands-and-knees so helps with the development of crawling
When should you intervene?
👶It’s okay if your kiddo occasionally w-sits. You just don’t want this to be a preferred seated play position. If it is, gently move one leg forward and give them a gentle cue like “sit properly.” Avoid telling them not to w-sit. We all know what happens when you tell a toddler NOT to do something. 🙄🤣
✴️ Note that if your child has difficulty sitting in any other position besides w-sitting, consider a PT evaluation for further help with this.
