🎙️ NEW EPISODE: Gut & Grit

In 1990, Keith Trexler bought an abandoned granite quarry covered in graffiti and broken glass. Everyone else saw a wreck.

He saw something else entirely.

What followed was decades of frozen dives, sandblasted cliffs, and a total transformation — the story of what happens when vision refuses to quit.

Your Liver Works Quietly, Until It Doesn't

The liver rarely sends up warning flares. It can be under stress from fatty liver disease, alcohol use, or a viral infection for years before symptoms like fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or jaundice ever show up.

Fatty liver disease in particular is becoming more common, often tied to diet, weight, and blood sugar, not just alcohol.

The upside is that liver conditions caught early are often very manageable. Bloodwork, imaging, and a conversation with a gastroenterologist can go a long way toward protecting long term liver and digestive health.

If it's been a while since your liver health has come up at a checkup, it might be worth asking.

What GLP-1 Medications Mean for Your Digestive System

GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide have changed the conversation around diabetes and weight management, but as gastroenterologists, we want patients to understand what these medications do to their digestive system.

These drugs work in part by slowing down how quickly the stomach empties. That's part of why they help with fullness and blood sugar control, but it's also why nausea, bloating, and reflux are such common side effects.

It also matters for procedures. If you're on a GLP-1 medication and scheduled for an endoscopy or colonoscopy, tell your care team. Delayed gastric emptying can affect sedation safety and bowel prep, so timing sometimes needs to be adjusted.

If digestive side effects are more than mild, don't just push through them. Talk to your doctor.

Struggling with a digestive condition can make mealtime feel stressful instead of enjoyable.

The right nutrition guidance can make a real difference, whether you're managing IBS, gastroparesis, celiac disease, or another GI condition.

At Bedford Gastroenterology, our nutrition and dietary counseling is built around your specific diagnosis, not a one-size-fits-all plan.

Small, personalized changes can lead to real relief. Visit bedfordgastro.com to learn more.

🎙️ New Episode: Gut & Grit

Why does food get "stuck"? Why does your throat feel raw for no reason? Turns out GI and ENT overlap more than you'd think.

Dr. Christopher Dainiak and ENT surgeon Dr. Doug O'Brien break down:
🔹 Why some people quietly adapt their whole diet around swallowing problems
🔹 The soda habit that's basically a liquid candy bar
🔹 Nasal polyps, reflux, and the surgery that's changing how we treat achalasia
🔹 What your doctor is actually looking for during a swallow study

Bottom line: your symptoms don't care about specialty lines. Neither should your treatment.

Ever feel full after just a few bites, or nauseous long after a meal has ended? It could be more than a sensitive stomach.

Gastroparesis happens when the stomach empties food more slowly than it should, sometimes because of diabetes, sometimes for reasons that are never fully identified.

Common signs include:
➜ Nausea after eating
➜ Feeling full too quickly
➜ Bloating
➜ Unexplained weight loss

At Bedford Gastroenterology, we help patients get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan that actually works. Read more in our latest article.

Myth: Colonoscopies are something you only need if you're having symptoms.

Fact: Colonoscopies are one of the most effective tools for preventing colon cancer because they can find and remove precancerous polyps before they become cancer.

Many people feel perfectly healthy before a screening discovers something important.

If you're due for a screening, don't put it off. A preventive exam today could help protect your health for years to come.
