Take three herbs and mix them in the right proportions, and you can get rid of your nighttime anxiety and improve your sleep, yes, really…it’s that simple.

If you’d rather try a natural solution than an over the counter or even prescription medication, why not? I know I’ve difficulty turning off my brain before bedtime. I just can’t seem to stop thinking as I lay there. I’ve found that the Anxiety and Sleep herbal concoction I have of lemon balm, passionflower and valerian root to be my before bed go-to blend.

These three herbs are well known for their calming and sleep supporting effects, and they often work together to improve both anxiety and sleep quality. All three herbs influence the brain’s gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) system, which is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter that slows neural activity and promotes relaxation.

Using these herbs together can produce additive or synergistic benefits:
• Passionflower and valerian together can balance relaxation.
• Passionflower and lemon balm can calm the mind and body without excessive sedation.
• Lemon balm + valerian combinations have been shown to enhance sleep effects beyond either herb alone.

Safety & Notes
These herbs are generally well tolerated, but possible side effects include mild drowsiness, vivid dreams, or gastrointestinal upset. Avoid high doses of valerian if you have liver issues, and consult a healthcare provider if you take medications (especially sedatives or anticoagulants).

In summary: Lemon balm, passionflower, and valerian root all work by boosting GABA activity, calming the nervous system, and improving sleep. Used together, they can provide a gentle, natural approach to reducing anxiety and supporting restful sleep.

What was old is new again.

I recently met a Tahuya Tea customer at the Bouchard Boutique who used to by the Cacao Rose tea blend I sold. It wasn’t terribly popular so I discontinued it…but I was asked to bring it back. So, I have. And a new group of tea lovers are now appreciating its unique taste and herbal benefits.

Cacao is rich in antioxidants that may improve blood vessel function and lower blood pressure. Cacao contains magnesium and iron, which support overall health and energy. Rose is rich in antioxidants and vitamins offering benefits for immunity, digestion, skin health, stress relief and menstrual comfort.

Cacao Rose combines decadent cacao shells with fragrant rose petals. This is a caffeine-free blend in general, but since chocolate and cacao alike contain very minor natural stimulants like theobromine, it is considered a caffeinated blend. This blend of Cacao Rose offers a rich chocolate flavor with floral top notes. A little bit of dried stevia leaf knocks down the bitterness of cacao.

Stevia is a sweet, calorie-free herb native to South America, widely used as a natural sugar substitute. Stevia is all natural, not artificial. Many diabetics find it useful in their nutritional lifestyle plan. Pure stevia leaf extract contains steviol glycosides, which are about 200–300 times sweeter than sugar but have no calories or carbohydrates. This means it has a low glycemic index (near 0) and does not raise blood glucose levels. Some studies suggest stevia may even improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.

Always consult with a trusted health pracitioner.

Drink wisely: Herbal teas offer targeted therapeutic benefits and are usually caffeine-free, while traditional teas provide antioxidants and moderate caffeine for heart health, metabolism, and mental alertness.

Key Differences in Ingredients and Caffeine
Traditional teas (black, green, white, oolong, pu-erh) are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant. Their health benefits largely come from polyphenols, including catechins in green tea and theaflavins in black tea, which act as antioxidants supporting cardiovascular health, cholesterol management, and metabolism. They also contain caffeine and L-theanine, which together promote alertness with a calm focus.

Herbal teas, or tisanes, are made from a variety of plants, flowers, roots, seeds, and fruits, such as chamomile, peppermint, hibiscus, ginger, and lemongrass. They are typically caffeine-free, making them ideal for relaxation or evening consumption. Their benefits are often ingredient-specific: chamomile aids sleep and relaxation, peppermint supports digestion, hibiscus may help lower blood pressure, and ginger has anti-inflammatory properties.

Antioxidant and Cardiovascular Benefits
Traditional teas are rich in antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Green tea catechins may also enhance fat oxidation and support weight management. Black tea’s theaflavins contribute to cholesterol reduction and improved circulation. Herbal teas provide antioxidants as well, though the type varies by plant. For example, rooibos contains aspalathin, and hibiscus provides anthocyanins, both of which may reduce oxidative stress and support cardiovascular function.

Digestive and Relaxation Effects
Herbal teas often excel in digestive support and relaxation. Peppermint and ginger can soothe the stomach, while chamomile and lavender promote calmness and better sleep. Traditional teas may also aid digestion indirectly through polyphenols but are more commonly consumed for energy and cognitive benefits.

Mental Alertness and Energy
Traditional teas provide moderate caffeine, which can enhance alertness, focus, and cognitive performance. L-theanine in tea helps balance caffeine’s stimulating effects, promoting a calm yet attentive state. Herbal teas generally lack caffeine, so they are better suited for relaxation rather than mental stimulation.
