For a little over two weeks in September 2005, Harris Health showed the world how a public healthcare system can respond to disasters (natural or man-made). Such was the case after the Aug. 29 landfall of Hurricane Katrina over Louisiana and Mississippi.

Within hours of being notified that evacuees from the Superdome in New Orleans would be transported to the Houston Astrodome, Harris Health staff was hard at work constructing a healthcare facility from scratch inside Reliant Astrodome Arena. Originally occupying 25,000 square feet, the clinic eventually grew to 100,000 square feet within 72 hours of operation.

Harris Health operated the Astrodome Clinic from Sept. 1-15 and cared for 25,000 evacuees from Louisiana.

Throughout its 60 years Harris Health has been fortunate to have thousands of in-kind donors—individuals, groups, faith-based and non-profit organizations—provide much needed items for our patients. Donated items include handmade quilts, knitted caps, blankets, toys, puzzles, craft kits, and many necessities such as cancer kits, toiletries, and snack kits.

In the last three years alone, donors have provided almost half a million dollars' worth of in-kind items for Harris Health patients. We want to thank all the in-kind donors for the positive impact they have on our patients and their families.

Harris Health Casa de Amigos Health Center opened its doors for patients in north Houston on Aug. 21, 1979.

Originally located in a church basement, Casa de Amigos moved into a small house where the living room served as the waiting area, the two bedrooms were exam rooms and the kitchen served as the pharmacy. Its third location was in a city building.

Casa de Amigos moved to its current location at 1615 N. Main in the fall 1982.

Today, a larger facility thanks to expansion in 2025, in addition to providing primary care, Casa de Amigos offers specialty care, including obstetrics, ophthalmology and psychiatry, as well as, on-site laboratory, pharmacy and nutrition services.

The team, made up of 57 staff members and 13 physicians from Baylor College of Medicine, sees an average of 175 patients a day and cared for 38,170 individuals in 2025.
