Older Americans (adults age 65 and older) make up about 17% of the U.S. population. Driven by increased life expectancy and the aging baby-boomer generation, this demographic is experiencing rapid growth, bringing new opportunities and challenges in healthcare.
Americans turning 65 live an average of roughly 19 more years, with life expectancy continuing to climb. They are also living independently. Nearly 60% of older adults live with a spouse or partner, while over a quarter live completely alone.

We hope you have enjoyed our Mental Health series this month and learned about the effect of medications and imbalances on mental health.

Our final imbalance is from laxative overuse. Having an electrolyte imbalance that leads to chronic laxative abuse causes low blood potassium, hyponatremia, and metabolic derangements that can produce confusion, lethargy, muscle weakness, and psychiatric disturbances.

Are you taking birth control? It's possible it's doing more than preventing a pregnancy.

Hormonal contraceptives (OTC in some states) — A landmark Danish study of over 1 million women found combined oral contraceptive users had a 1.23x increased rate of antidepressant use; adolescents (15–19) had a 1.8x increased rate. The association was strongest in the first 6 months of use.

We know moving our bodies is important to our health but we often forget all the elements of physical fitness.
Do you have endurance? The ability of your heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen to your body tissues during sustained physical activity. What about muscular strength? The maximum amount of force a muscle group can exert in a single effort. Also important is muscular endurance- the ability of your muscles to perform continuous, repeated contractions against resistance over a period of time without fatiguing. As we age, flexibility plays a super important role- the range of motion available at a given joint, which is crucial for injury prevention and posture. And last but not least, body composition- the ratio of fat, bone, muscle, and water within the body.
Keep all these components in mind when you're making decisions to move your body daily!

The use of PPIs over long periods could be affecting your mental health.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (Prilosec, Nexium, etc.) — Long-term PPI use has been associated with depression, cognitive impairment, and dementia risk. PPIs may cross the blood-brain barrier and cause vitamin B12 deficiency, which itself impairs cognition. Study data shows psychiatric adverse events in ~12.8% of all PPI reports.
