I recently met up with Bill Porter, also known as translator Red Pine. He is a translator of ancient Chinese hermit poets such as Cold Mountain, and my favorite, Stonehouse, and ancient texts like the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra and the Tao Te Ching.
I admire him for his lifelong dedication to his translation work, his skill in doing that work, his genuine manner, and kind spirit. Over some limited edition bourbon, I got to ask all kinds of questions about his work, traveling in China, Zen buddhism in the East, and hear about his colorful life. We met years ago at a large function and am grateful to my friend Michael Wiegers at Copper Canyon press for reconnecting us, and for this life I get to lead.
This is all to say: if you have the opportunity to meet someone you admire, lean in and don’t pass it up.
