No Mud No Lotus - Bread and Honey (breadandhoneyblog.net)

Hi Friends; I ran across this phrase earlier this week. It kind of says it all. So many teachings speak of liberating our human suffering – and yet typically their words are directed towards the emotional suffering that all humans experience. I have often pondered the physical suffering that my patients live with, which of course leads to emotional suffering as well.

My hope that it is possible to decrease my patients “suffering” and helping them become more mindful of the mental inner dialogue that contributes to this (mindfulness). In doing so, the physical pain should also lesson. What I (think I) know from my pain studies, is that any suffering will trigger our fight/flight systems and release more stress chemicals which make our nerve endings more sensitive and painful. So, it makes sense that one’s journey with pain is not unlike one’s journey to find relief from the emotional suffering that life will inevitably provide.

In my own life I seem to return to this theme over and over. When I am struggling and miserable with life’s circumstances, I start to feel like I’ve failed. The inner story sounds like: “I’ve done ALL OF THIS mindful, spiritual stuff and here I am still suffering!” And eventually I re-learn (over and over and over) that this “mud” is part of the experience and as I learn to be with the discomfort it creates in my system, the mud will eventually settle and once again I will experience aspects of my own personal lotus.

I wish for you the ability to be lovingly with your mud!

I've been reading an excellent book to help/support people in persistent pain and wanted to share this quote. "Never ignore pain. The presence of pain is an opportunity to learn conscious living so thoroughly that it informs your whole life and your outlook, beyond your physical movements." Darlene Cohen, Turning Suffering Inside Out.

Of course, the challenge is making the commitment to conscious living and finding the right guide, coach, counselor, tools, etc... as well as making the time for oneself to learn to listen when everything inside you just wants to figure out how to run from or suppress the pain. AND, it is possible!

For the past 15-20 years every time I have taught a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson (ie; gentle mindful movements done on the floor with curiosity).
