Make Better Choices 2

Make Better Choices 2 MBC2 employs technology to help you eat better, sleep better, and get more exercise. And participants were able to keep up the positive changes.

The goal of the study is to test whether MBC2 can promote healthy changes and prevent unnecessary sickness and death in people in Eastern Kentucky. An earlier version of this study helped people make and maintain health behavior changes. The current study is being led by Nancy E. Schoenberg, Ph.D. Dr Schoenberg is a professor of behavioral science in UK’s College of Medicine. Deanna Lee Sherman, w

ho lives in Harlan County, is the study’s project manager. Many members of local communities have contributed to the project’s design. For the past 16 years, Dr. Schoenberg has worked with talented and committed local residents to create health programming that people feel is important. Her projects include Faith Moves Mountains. MBC2 brings one of the most innovative new programs to improve health to Eastern Kentucky. Study participants will:
• Use a new health app and a Fitbit to track eating, sleeping, exercise
• Work with a trained, local health coach
• Participate in 2 in-person health checks
• Receive $ incentives for meeting goals

To qualify for this study, you should:
• Be willing to track your health behaviors with a Smartphone App and a Fitbit

Sherry Spragens of Rockcastle County finished Make Better Choices 2. The program helped her find ways to Make Better Choices. She found that both the health app and the personalized coaching helped her on the journey: “Just talking to someone who would listen to your stories and help you think of ways to relieve stress,” Spragens said.

Mayfest 2026 Bringing Music, Food, Vendors and Family Fun to Downtown Whitesburg Kentucky

Downtown Whitesburg is preparing for one of its biggest community celebrations of the spring as Mayfest 2026 returns on Saturday, May 16, bringing a full day of entertainment, shopping, food, and family fun.

Organizers say the event is already shaping up to be one of the largest Mayfest celebrations yet, with more than 30 vendors already confirmed and additional participants continuing to sign up.

Visitors can expect a lively atmosphere filled with live music, food trucks, handmade crafts, local artisans, woodworkers, clothing vendors, jewelry booths, games, and activities for all ages.

Live music on Main Street begins at 4:00pm with Johnny Pop Day, followed by the Rock n Roll Princess and the band Something Sandy and concludes with The Hall Brothers band.

Families can also enjoy train rides for children and plenty of entertainment spread throughout the downtown area.

A major highlight this year will be the “Battle on the Bridge” Co****le Tournament, where teams will compete for bragging rights and community pride in what organizers expect to be a crowd-favorite competition.

In addition to festival vendors and attractions, downtown businesses will remain open during the event and many plan to offer special promotions and sales throughout the day. Organizers encourage visitors to spend time shopping local and supporting small businesses that help keep the downtown community thriving.

“Mayfest is about bringing people together,” organizers shared. “We want families and friends to come enjoy the day, support local businesses, and make memories right here in Letcher County in downtown Whitesburg.”

Community members are encouraged to mark their calendars now and make plans to spend the day downtown enjoying everything Mayfest 2026 has to offer.

Mayfest 2026 will take place Saturday, May 16, in Downtown Whitesburg.

For vendor information and event updates, follow Letcher County Tourism page.
