This Saturday on June 13 the Arlington Memorial High School Community Service Club will be hosting a road race on River Road in Arlington, Vermont. The goal of the Steps Towards Home 5k / 12k is to raise funds to support Bennington County youth in foster care.

All proceeds will be donated to the Bennington County Department for Children and Families and will be used to purchase everyday items that these children and teens need such as food, clothes, and diapers. The foster care system is greatly burdened and under-resourced.

Supporting those involved in the foster care system is a great need in our community. Let's all do our part and take a step forward in supporting those in our community who need a safe home the most. I hope to see you on Saturday!!

A statement by Dr. Andrew Racine, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, on a federal judge's ruling to block key aspects of HHS Secretary RFK Jr’s efforts to upend vaccine policy:

“Today’s ruling is a historic and welcome outcome for children, communities, and pediatricians everywhere. When Secretary Kennedy made unsupported and unscientific changes to pediatric immunization recommendations last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) was mission-bound to step up and push back against these dangerous actions that have sown chaos and confusion for parents and pediatricians across the country. This decision effectively means that a science-based process for developing immunization recommendations is not to be trifled with and represents a critical step to restoring scientific decision-making to federal vaccine policy that has kept children healthy for years.

“For decades, the AAP partnered closely with the federal government to advance our mission of attaining the optimal health and well-being of children and youth. We would much prefer to return to that partnership and collaborate with federal healthcare agencies instead of litigating against them. Through this partnership, the AAP and federal health agencies collaborated closely, reviewing the science and discussing the latest evidence alongside experts, to develop clear, unified routine childhood and adolescent immunization recommendations that protect children from dangerous, preventable illnesses.

“We stand by ready to resume this role, which is why we issued our annual update to the childhood immunization schedule that has been formally endorsed by more than 12 national medical societies and supported by hundreds of public health groups, experts, and advocates. In the wake of today’s decision, one thing remains clear: parents can continue to turn to the AAP’s childhood vaccine recommendations and talk with their pediatrician about how to best protect their children's health.”

Some children and teenagers with ADHD do not just dislike criticism - they feel it deeply.

A small comment can feel like total rejection. A simple mistake can feel like proof they have failed. A neutral look can be read as anger. The emotional reaction is fast, intense and overwhelming.

This is often described as rejection sensitivity or Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. It is important to say clearly that Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria is not an official diagnosis. It is an informal term used to describe intense emotional responses to perceived rejection.

This is not about being dramatic. It is not attention seeking. Emotional dysregulation is common in ADHD. The brain can struggle to pause, process and calm strong feelings.

Over time, repeated criticism and misunderstanding can increase shame, anxiety and low self esteem. Some children shut down. Some avoid trying. Some say “Nobody likes me” after a small problem. The pain is real.

Understanding the pattern helps adults respond differently. Calm, clear feedback and separating behaviour from the child reduces shame and builds resilience. ADHD is not only about focus. It is also about emotions.

I interviewed a pediatric ER doctor about the single biggest threat to children that most parents never discuss.

Dr. Bronwen Carroll sees the aftermath of child sexual abuse in the emergency room. But it wasn't until a predator was arrested at her own daughter's school that she realized how unprepared most families are.

Sexual assault is the most common serious trauma to happen to children, affecting at least 10 percent of kids before age 18. Yet, unlike drowning or car seat safety, we give parents almost no guidance on prevention.

Dr. Carroll explained that predators operate like a football team with a single play. They need three things: access, compliance, and secrecy. If we teach kids to block that play, we can stop them.

Her advice starts with one simple rule: Adults do not ask children to keep secrets.

A secret is different from a surprise (like a birthday gift). A secret is meant to be hidden forever. If an adult, whether a coach, a relative, or a teacher, asks a child to keep a secret, that is an immediate red flag.

She also advises parents to "scaffold" conversations early. Start with bodily autonomy at bath time for toddlers. Talk about online safety and po*******hy before they stumble upon it, so they know they can come to you without shame.

Most importantly, she stressed that predators target kids they perceive as having low parental involvement. Simply showing up, introducing yourself to the coach, and being a visible presence in your child's life is a powerful deterrent.
