Balanced Yoga & Wellness

Balanced Yoga & Wellness BYW is a referral-based private practice in Berlin, MD that offers evidence-informed Yoga Therapy Why not strive to become as fully integrated as possible?

BY&W employs an inter-disciplinary approach to the art and science of yoga: from mindful movement and breath-centered practices, to positive psychology and the latest in anatomy, neuroscience and pain research, our aim is to bring the nervous and musculoskeletal systems back into functional balance, to increase stress resilience (our ability to 'cope'), and from that space, encourage integration o

f the body-mind-spirit complex. The goal is a sense of self-empowerment through connectedness - whether it's the lumbo-sacral rhythm, the head-to-heart (thoughts-to-emotions), the gut-to-brain (the enteric nervous system), or the Self-to-the-Whole...what we create on the microcosm of our sticky mat, we bring to the macrocosm of our world.

There are moments when connection feels natural…effortless
and moments when something in us begins to signal, to tap on the door of our awareness.

The body has its own way of communicating through each experience:
a tightening, a softening,
a sense of openness or protection.

This is often when we leave ourselves, when we abandon the present moment, and go into the archives of past experience to calculate the (endless) possibilities of the outcomes that might hurt the most. The irony is, in the time spent performing these calculations, predicting these outcomes to avoid pain, the cells of our body are living every one of them, real time. That’s what’s happening in the only time that matters…now.

QOTW: What shifts in my body when I allow myself to be fully present?

Take an aware breath and notice where there is ease.
Where there is resistance.
Take another aware breath and notice
what begins to change when presence replaces prediction?

One thing this work has taught me is that there is no point at which I will say, "I have arrived!"

This nervous system regulation work will continue for as long as I have a nervous system to regulate. This spiritual work will continue as long as I have a spirit. Sooo....basically, forever.

In the meantime, I practice, apply, and rest in the knowing of my foreverness. I notice the worries, the sensations, I breathe, I pray.

Knowing that my son is flying a tiny little plane in high winds at night from Ocean City to the Bay Bridge, with my husband in the plane, calls on every inner resource I have access to, every tool in my toolbelt, to handle it with steadiness, grace, and a deep trust in the unfolding of my path, and theirs.

The relief, when they landed safely, another opportunity to thank the Creator for one more day together.

Tomorrow...
I practice again.

There is something grounding, and really rewarding, about making your own dressing.

Simple ingredients.
A few minutes.
A little experimenting.
A chance to slow down and actually connect with what you are nourishing yourself with.

This one came together with a mix of raw pistachio butter, sprouted almond butter, h**p hearts, pumpkin seeds, nutritional yeast, dates, garlic, and a little water to bring it all together.

One of the things I love most about salads is how playful they can be.
Different textures.
Different colors.
Different flavors.
You can keep shifting and adding based on what your body is craving that day.

Spring especially feels like a beautiful season to bring in more greens, fresh crunch, and vibrant foods that feel alive.

I also love making my own dressings because it gives me a chance to simplify ingredients and add more depth and nourishment in a way that feels good to me.

Stay tuned for more of my favorite simple homemade dressings.

For the past few weeks, my attention has been devoted elsewhere.

My son graduated from high school. There was prom, a boardwalk parade, celebrations, preparations, and the many details involved in helping him move into an apartment in another state. It has been a season filled with activity, emotion, transition, joy - and lots of surrender!

That included pressing pause on my social media efforts.

There are times in life when something important calls for our full presence. A chapter is ending, another is beginning. A loved one needs support. A meaningful opportunity arrives. Life asks us to direct our energy toward what matters most in that moment.

Pressing pause doesn’t mean giving up, or even losing momentum. It doesn’t mean abandoning what you value.

Sometimes it means honoring priorities, creating space for what is happening right now.

And sometimes it means trusting that what matters can be picked back up when the season shifts, as it inevitably will.

We live in a culture that encourages constant movement, constant output, and constant availability.

Yet there is wisdom in recognizing when a temporary pause creates room for something more important to be fully experienced - and integrated.

Those moments with my son cannot be recreated, or revisited, except in memory. And if I move through them too fast, even the memories will be a blur.

The social media posts can wait.

QOTW: What is worth pressing “pause” for?

Take a moment to notice where your time, energy, and attention are currently flowing.

Is there something asking for more of your presence?

Is there something that would benefit from a temporary pause so that you can fully engage with what matters most right now?

Sometimes the pause is not an interruption to the journey, it’s a critical aspect of it.

At one moment, one form feels comfortable, right, useful; at another moment, another form. Just keep flowing in and out of the forms. Use them and then drop them-the forms aren't "it." The point isn't to cling to one practice or another, one teacher or another; the point is to use whatever can in this moment open you to living spirit. - Ram Dass, Paths to God

I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Workplace Wellness Fair at Wor-Wic Community College last week.

It was fun to connect with faculty and staff, share a little about my work, and meet some new faces along the way.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the table, shared conversation, participated in Chair Yoga, or simply took a moment to connect. There is something meaningful about gathering in spaces that support well-being, presence, and community.

Deep appreciation to Wor-Wic for welcoming me and creating space for these conversations and experiences to unfold.

There are moments when my mind begins adding layers…
solving, preparing, analyzing, seeking certainty.

Beneath that lies potential for something quieter,
something clear,
something ...simple.

My body relates to simplicity in its own way,
differently than my mind.
There is a spaciousness,
an ease in my breath,
a sense of steadiness...

a wondering if perhaps things are more simple than my mind is interpreting.

QOTW: Where am I making something more complicated than it needs to be?

How might it feel to notice how your body responds to this question, not your mind?
What feels layered?
What feels clear?
What begins to soften when there is less to carry?

What if
we’re misinterpreting discontentment
through the foggy lens
of outdated survival rules & identities
instead of seeing it as
the evolutionary impulse for change
that it is?

bare feet in grass
sunlight on skin
quiet return to self

nourishment that is
simple, steady, always available

abiding in ease

nervous system begins to settle
breath finds its natural rhythm
heart’s longings emerge
body remembers - or learns -
what it feels like to be supported
spirit speaks

grounding:
step outside, soar inside

notice what shifts

softening
steadiness
surprise at how much complexity can be held
in the simplicity
of simply being

nourished
