Virginia Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) is native to eastern North America. It’s small fruit packs a lot of flavor. According to Cherokee mythology, the first strawberries were created by The Sun to reunite the quarreling First Man and First Woman. It sure will make you stop in your tracks, sit down, and share a snack.

We plant enough to share. When we see our crops getting nibbled on, we give thanks to be part of the ecosystem (and definitely don’t reach for poison). The way we farm is a whole paradigm shift. Not only do we make sure to steward the land in a way that supports all of life, we’ve even ran to the grocery store when the caterpillars run out of dill and parsley and we’ve brought our gulf fritillary friends inside before a hard freeze. 😅 support your local, regenerative, animistic farmers. I promise you no one is tending life quite the way they are!

My favorite way to remember a key difference between poison hemlock and Queen Anne’s lace is “the Queen has hairy legs.” While the stalk of hemlock is smooth with purple splotches, Queen Anne’s lace has small white prickly hairs along the stem. QAL flowers are all fairly close together while hemlock has small distinct clusters. QAL often, but not always, has a red spot in the center of the flowers.

A key rule in foraging is “when in doubt, leave it out!” And I am especially careful with the carrot family because of water hemlock and poison hemlock.
