Similar to many of you my world has been abuzz with concerns regarding the government shut down and paused monies for both food subsidies and farm based grant projects. I urge you all to try not to feed into the scarcity narrative. The truth is we are a community of furtunate abundance. We just need...

๐ŸŒŸ Boosting Iron Naturally: What You Need to Know About Iron Deficiency & Anemia

๐Ÿฉธ Who Is at Risk for Iron Deficiency?
Iron deficiency is commonโ€”and not just in people with anemia. You can have low iron stores (ferritin) and still feel tired, foggy, or out of balance, even if your hemoglobin is technically normal. This is especially common in:

People who follow vegetarian or vegan diets

Women of childbearing age (due to menstruation or postpartum loss)

Pregnant and breastfeeding women

People with digestive issues (low stomach acid, celiac disease, IBD)

Endurance athletes or frequent blood donors

Those with a history of surgery or chronic illness

โš ๏ธ Symptoms of Low Iron (Even Without Anemia):
Fatigue and low energy

Brain fog and difficulty focusing

Hair thinning or increased shedding

Restless legs or twitching at night

Dizziness or lightheadedness

Cold hands and feet

Shortness of breath with exertion

Palpitations or a racing heartbeat

๐Ÿ’Š Iron Supplement Tips:
The iron supplement Iโ€™ve recommended includes:

Iron glycinate โ€“ gentle, well-absorbed, and easier on digestion

Vitamin C โ€“ enhances iron absorption

Vitamin B12 โ€“ often needed in plant-based diets

If you're exploring alternatives, look for:

15โ€“30 mg of elemental iron per serving

In the form of iron glycinate or iron gluconate

Paired with vitamin C (or taken with a vitamin C-rich food)

Bonus if it includes vitamin B12, especially for vegetarians or vegans

๐Ÿ’ก If iron causes stomach upset or constipation, try every-other-day dosing, which can still be very effective.

โณ How Long Will It Take to Replenish Iron?
Restoring iron levels takes time. With consistent supplementation and diet, expect 6โ€“12 months to fully rebuild ferritin and iron stores. We'll recheck your labs along the way and adjust your plan as needed.

๐Ÿฅ— Iron-Rich Foods to Support Your Recovery
๐ŸŒฑ Plant-Based Sources:

Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, soybeans, tofu

Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, collards, swiss chard

Seeds & Nuts: Pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, cashews, almonds

Whole Grains: Quinoa, fortified cereals, oatmeal, brown rice

Dried Fruits: Apricots, raisins, prunes

Others: Blackstrap molasses, tempeh, dark chocolate (70%+)

๐Ÿ– Animal-Based Sources (Higher Absorption):

Red Meat: Beef, lamb, bison

Poultry: Chicken, turkey (especially dark meat)

Seafood: Oysters, clams, mussels, sardines, tuna

Organ Meats: Liver (especially beef or chicken liver)

Eggs: Particularly the yolk

Bone Broth: Especially if made with marrow-rich bones

โœ… Tips to Maximize Iron Absorption
Take iron with vitamin C-rich foods: citrus, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli

Cook in cast iron pans to increase iron in meals

Soak, sprout, or ferment grains/legumes to reduce iron-blocking compounds (phytates)

Avoid coffee, tea, and dairy with iron-rich mealsโ€”they can interfere with absorption

Space iron and calcium supplements by at least 1โ€“2 hours

Try taking iron on an empty stomach, but a light snack is okay if needed for comfort

Questions About Cholesterol? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿฉธ
Did you know insulin resistance and dietary carbs play a bigger role in high cholesterol than dietary fat or cholesterol itself? ๐Ÿคฏ

One of the most useful markers in a standard lipid panel is the HDL:Triglyceride (TG) Ratioโ€”a simple but powerful indicator of metabolic health & cardiovascular risk.

How to Calculate Your HDL:TG Ratio
๐Ÿงฎ Formula:
TG:HDL Ratio = Triglycerides (mg/dL) รท HDL (mg/dL)

๐Ÿ“Š Example:
If your Triglycerides = 145 mg/dL and your HDL = 50 mg/dL, then:
145 รท 50 = 2.9

What Does Your Ratio Mean?
โœ… < 1.5 (Optimal) โ€“ Low risk, good insulin sensitivity
โš  1.5 - 2.5 (Moderate) โ€“ Possible insulin resistance, moderate cardiovascular risk
๐Ÿšจ > 2.5 (High Risk) โ€“ Increased risk of heart disease & metabolic dysfunction

Why Does This Matter?
๐Ÿ” A high TG:HDL ratio suggests insulin resistance, small dense LDL particles (more dangerous than LDL alone), and an increased risk of heart disease.
๐Ÿ’ก A low TG:HDL ratio indicates better metabolic health, lower cardiovascular risk, and improved lipid metabolism.

The Root Cause Approach ๐ŸŒฑ
Instead of just lowering cholesterol, focus on reversing insulin resistance:
โœ… Reduce refined carbs & sugar
โœ… Increase healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil, wild fish)
โœ… Eat more fiber & nutrient-dense foods
โœ… Exercise regularly (especially strength training & walking after meals! ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช)
โœ… Consider omega-3s, niacin, and berberine

๐Ÿ’ก Cholesterol is NOT the enemyโ€”metabolic dysfunction is! Want to improve your cardiovascular risk profile? Start by addressing insulin resistance.
