💪Why I Train My Son the Way I Do🧠
It’s not just about the weight room.
It’s not just about a number on the scale.
It’s about mindset.
Strength means nothing if you fall apart under pressure. Sport exposes what’s already built inside — discipline, emotional control, focus, resilience.
Teen athletes are still developing neurologically. The prefrontal cortex — responsible for impulse control, decision-making, and emotional regulation — isn’t fully developed until the mid-20s. That means we don’t just train muscles. We train composure, confidence, and stress response.
Because pressure isn’t the enemy.
Poor preparation is.
When I coach over-40 adults, many are rebuilding what life wore down — confidence, discipline, consistency. With teens, we have the opportunity to build it early. To lay the foundation before doubt, distraction, and comparison take over.
Research consistently shows mental skills training — visualization, self-talk, structured goal-setting — improves performance, lowers anxiety, and strengthens resilience. That’s not motivational fluff. That’s performance science.
So I train my son to:
• Stay calm under stress
• Recover fast from mistakes
• Separate identity from outcomes
• Build discipline when no one is watching
Because the strongest athlete isn’t the one who lifts the most.
It’s the one who thinks clearly when it matters.
This isn’t just about sport.
It’s preparation for life.
