So hereās my 5 year update after my MRI test and doctor follow-up last week. It has taken a lot for me to finally believe that I have done something that made the difference.
Five years ago, I heard the words nobody wants to hear (but most of us will): āyou have cancer.ā
I was fortunate in that my cancer was slow growing. I already knew that I did not want chemotherapy - I had seen first-hand the devastation it causes to oneās body by killing healthy cells along side the cancer cells. I attended all the standard of care medical appointments, began my own research. and educated myself under Dr. Nasha Winters, author of the Metabolic Approach to Cancer. In the back of my head, I was thinking if I was able to help myself, I wanted to help others too. I formulated a business plan, changed my website, and began sharing posts on Facebook @ Porsia Wellness. But as my journey progressed, I found that I struggled with the thought of helping others. What I was doing, was not easy and for the most part, it did not make logical sense to anybody except myself. I discovered that alternative treatments can still decrease quality of life and that the drugs were not without possible side effects and/or damage to my organs. I have had bloodwork every three months for five years to monitor myself and, thankfully, I did not experience any negative side effects. BUT, I want to be clear that a Cancer diagnosis will change your life forever no matter what!
Iāve heard many say that they feel alone in their journey. Reality is that we all probably know someone with Cancer and that the world is full of suggestions and opinions. Truth is disease is VERY individualized and our choices will never take us down the exact treatment path as someone else; and that goes against every fiber in our body that just wants someone to tell us what to do.
I have lost a lot on my journey:
I lost weight;
I lost indulgent foods that I loved;
I lost socialization because of my treatment schedule, etc;
I lost many doctors;
I lost friends;
I lost my marriage;
Hell, I lost a piece of myself.
But I would do it all again just to be able to write this post and share that I am well. šš»
What does that mean? š³
Wellā¦(no pun intended) letās be clear about labels: survivor, thriver, remission, NED, RAD6, cured, and the list goes on and on. But when you are diagnosed, you become keenly aware of what you are hoping for. Let me define a few labels to be more accurate:
Cure-there isnāt one!
Survivor-youāre alive (SOC)
Thriver-youāre alive and doing well
Remission-cancer is dormant
NED-āhmmm, whereād it go?ā
RAD6-medically diagnosed with cancer (I will forever be this.)
IMHO, I believe that everyone has cancer cells in their body and that something āturns them onā. Scientifically it is believed that cancer is caused by a mutated cell that starts to spread; however newer science believes cancer is caused by cell damage to a healthy, normal cell which causes the mutation. Both match my belief that something gets āturned it on.ā
So what I was hoping for was simply to āturn it off.ā I thought that I needed to know the āwhatā in order to do this, but reality is our world is full of āwhatsā and there is no way to remove all the possibilities (there are ways to narrow them down i.e. the Terrain Ten). But my focus began to shift to the āhowā.
Back to my status. I guess if I used a label, I am somewhere between thriver and remission.
I still have a 3mm mass (clump of cells where biopsy determined cancer cells were five years ago) However, testing shows that the mass is inactive, has shrunk a bit, but more importantly, is not changing. Over time, the mass could disappear with normal cell autophagy, or not. But I have achieved my goal to āturn offā my cancer cell activity and hope that through continued life-style changes and maintenance therapy, I will live a long, active and healthy life.
[You may wonder, ābut what about all those things you lostā and I will tell you they were all necessary and I would not change anything.]
I am truly blessed and will end this update with my gratitude.
Firstly, I thank God every day now! Then there are 2 people that changed my path without whom I would not be writing this post:
Christy Kesslering - who listened and then sent me the video that led me to Den Stacey, who shared his knowledge without recompense. Along with ALL the donors to my treatment fundraiser; I will forever be mindful that I did not accomplish this without support!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! šš»
Porsia Wellness will continue to share metabolic wellness posts, but it will no longer be a ābusinessā. I will happily share my knowledge for free, with anyone seeking to learn more, as Den (RIP), did for me! š
