🍂WHAT GRIEF LOOKS LIKE THIS FALL 🍂

This week, seven grief professionals are passing the baton from one to another, exploring grief through the lens of Fall.

Rather than telling you what grief should look like, we’re asking ourselves questions. Questions about the people we carry with us. The rituals that help us move through change. What we notice about ourselves as a new season begins. The many faces grief can wear. The small comforts that accompany us. And what might happen if we actually gave grief a seat at the table and listened to what it has to say.

Seven voices. Different perspectives. One ongoing conversation.

Follow along, listen, reflect, and then watch for the person each of us passes the mic to next!

There are four words that truly bug the sh*t out of me when I hear them in regard to someone’s death from an illness. Those words are “they lost the battle” or “they succumbed to (insert disease).” Take a listen to what I shared in my interview with Jason & Angeline last month on Creating Space for Grief & Hope. It’s an important message. People die not because they lost their fight. The disease they lived with didn’t win. The battle, the illness or whatever you feel comfortable calling it, ended. Hard stop. To say the battle was lost, negates all that the patient did to stay alive, and all that their caregiver and loved ones did to care for them and keep them alive. This wasn’t a sporting event where one side wins and one side loses. Their lives are far bigger than a battle. Words matter.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have been seeing the posts and news reports about Cornell and Jane Doe. I have been thinking about my own post for several days, and what I keep coming back to is the grief this young woman has been carrying for two years. Grieving her loss of innocence - believing her college campus was a safe space, grieving the betrayal of a guy who claimed to be her friend, grieving that seven frat boys disregarded her as a person and took what they wanted, grieving her violated body, grieving not being heard, grieving not being protected by the college, grieving not receiving justice, grieving the dreams, hopes & expectations of a future as a Cornell graduate, grieving so many things. I think about her family - her parents who are grieving. Grieving for their child’s assault, grieving her innocence being taken from her, grieving the faith they had in the school to where they excitedly sent her for a top notch education and a positive college experience, grieving that they couldn’t protect her from the privileged monsters who abused her body repeatedly over several hours. There are so many layers of grief here. It hurts my heart as a mother, as a grief professional, and as a human being.

You may be grieving for this young woman. Collective grief is part of the human experience. We grieve for others, even those we don’t know. Embrace your humanness and recognize the horror of what has happened to her and SO MANY other women who don’t have the support they deserve to speak up. Maybe you are grieving your own SA. I see you.

Jane Doe is grieving.

Finally posting a few pictures after an incredibly meaningful weekend in Chicago at the American Brain Tumor Association’s Annual National Conference. It was a joy to co-facilitate a caregiver support group with my friend & mentee, Shawn Carey on Friday afternoon, as well as watch him share his heart and story during a panel discussion on the main stage! I had the honor of providing some 1:1 grief sessions on Saturday with those who were caring for loved ones with Glioblastoma, and with some whose loved ones have died. Loved seeing my buddy, Jason Binder, take the stage for a panel discussion about AI and Ember Health AI. I loved seeing familiar faces, especially patients returning for another year (yay!) and good friends, making new friends, and working on collaborations with many in the medical community. A lot of exciting things coming in 2027.

Thank you American Brain Tumor Assoc. for all you do, and inviting me to join you, again. Kudos to the ABTA staff, and the 2026 co-chairs, Akanksha Sharma, MD and Dr. Michael Lim.

New Episode!!!

In this episode, I had so much fun speaking with my good friends, Jason Binder and Angeline Giamonna, who each experienced the realities of caring for a loved one with Glioblastoma. Their shared experiences eventually brought them together to create EmberHealth.ai, a free, AI-powered resource designed to help patients, caregivers, and their support networks navigate serious illness, including GBM and other cancers. Jason and Angeline share the challenges they faced finding trustworthy information and support and how those experiences shaped EmberHealth.ai. Together, they discuss caregiving, community, the potential for AI to provide compassionate and credible guidance, as well as transforming personal loss into meaningful change. We have a candid conversation as I ask questions about AI and the concerns many have about it (including myself).

If it’s September, that means it is conference, summit & symposium season! Honored to be co-facilitating a caregiver support group with@shawncarey42 at the American Brain Tumor Assoc. National Conference next week, then leading a grief workshop at Rutgers Cancer Institute Symposium the following week. Next month, I will facilitate a patient support group in NYC at the Glioblastoma Research Organization Summit, and a few days later will speak at their DC Summit on “Honoring and Embracing Grief: Coping with Glioblastoma Related Losses.” I love every aspect of my work as a grief professional, and speaking at conferences is one of my favorites! Thank you all for inviting me to be a part of your events.
