New research suggests celiac disease may have broader long-term health impacts than previously understood.

A nationwide study from Sweden, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, found patients with celiac disease faced nearly three times the risk of requiring a solid organ transplant compared with the general population. Researchers reported the strongest association with liver transplantation, with patients more than seven times as likely to require a liver transplant.

The study analyzed health data from more than 41,000 patients with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease over an average follow-up period of 12 years.

Researchers say the findings underscore the need for greater awareness of the disease’s potential systemic effects beyond the digestive tract.

If you guessed water, you're right!

While it's the obvious answer, we could all use the reminder, especially as many of us mark the unofficial start to summer today. So, remember to grab that reusable bottle and fill it with water before you head to the pool, to a barbecue, or a long hike this summer.

Your gut will thank you!

This World EoE Day, AGA and APFED are partnering to raise awareness about eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).

Eosinophilic esophagitis occurs when white blood cells build up in the esophagus, causing inflammation and scarring. This can lead to trouble swallowing, heartburn, and food getting stuck in the throat, making it uncomfortable for people with EoE to eat.

But food shouldn’t hurt.

For patients with EoE, there are options to care for the condition through changes to diet, using certain medications, and esophageal dilation.

If you or someone you know is navigating EoE, use the quiz found here: eoepatients.gastro.org as a starting point, and access more resources through the AGA EoE Resource Center and apfed.org/events/world-eoe-day.
