Pinching off basil flowers is one of those quick little garden chores that makes a massive difference. The second your basil starts flowering, the plant stops putting its energy into growing those tender, flavorful leaves and focuses entirely on making seeds instead.

Just snip those flower spikes off as soon as you spot them, cutting right above a set of healthy leaves. While you're at it, it’s a great idea to pinch back the main growing tips too—that forces the plant to branch out, leaving you with a much fuller, bushier plant instead of a tall, leggy one.

You’ve really got to stay on top of this every few days once the summer heat kicks in. Basil absolutely loves the warmth, but that hot, humid weather means it’ll try to throw up new blooms faster than you can keep up with.

The best part about basil is that the more you pick it, the more it actually wants to grow. Keeping up with a regular harvest keeps the plants super productive and loaded with fresh leaves, so you'll have a constant supply ready for pesto, salads, and cooking all summer long.
