Following up on our previous post about Senglith, here is an update at roughly 10 days post-op:

The primary goal of this reconstructive procedure was functional: restoring the right eyelids to adequately protect the eye and preserve his remaining sight.

Due to congenital anophthalmia on the left side, he has never had a left eye or vision on that side, making the health and protection of his right eye absolutely critical.

While he initially experienced difficulty with lid mobility right after surgery, he is now able to achieve full eyelid opening and complete closure.

Seeing this level of functional recovery and corneal protection at just 10 days out is a major milestone. Healing is still underway, but we are thrilled with his progress so far.

Meet Senglith, a young child born with a Tessier 4 facial cleft, prohibiting his only seeing eye from closing, leaving him at imminent risk of complete blindness.

A local social media influencer Chittixay Phommaseng interviewed him and asked about his wishes and dreams. Senglith said he doesn’t have any friends. Other children are afraid to look at him. And his dream? Not something extravagant. He simply wanted some toys to play with, an excavator truck.

Our next mission to his region, Laos, was not until 2027 and waiting was not an option, sparking an immediate, international effort across Laos, Vietnam, and the U.S. to coordinate his screening and navigate travel to Huįŗæ, Vietnam, for life-changing surgery.

Thanks to an extraordinary network of compassionate strangers and medical volunteers, I was able to successfully complete a 4hr surgery to reconstruct both his upper and lower eyelids. The procedure successfully restored the eyelid muscles needed to protect his remaining vision.

While healing and post-operative swelling will take time, his eyelids are already opening enough for him to see. Senglith is now receiving careful wound care and beginning the journey of strengthening his new eyelid muscles, bringing him one major step closer to a brighter, healthier future.

Team Cleft Repair has officially arrived in Hue, Vietnam and we’re all very happy to be here! After a long journey, we got right to work with our pre-screening day at the hospital, where the team screened 52 patients and cleared 40 for surgery.

Each patient and family arrived with their own story, many having traveled significant distances for the opportunity to receive care and that’s part of what our drives our passion to help as much as we can.

This is Operation International’s fourth visit to Hue, continuing our mission of providing cleft lip and palate care + reconstructive surgeries. With the screening process complete, the team is now moving into surgery and treatment, working together to care for patients throughout the week.

As always, I’m extremely grateful to be here, grateful to be part of the team, and looking forward to helping as many people as possible.

The clip shows how we carefully harvest a small section of rib cartilage that will be sculpted into a new outer ear for a young female patient with microtia.

Microtia is a congenital condition where the external ear does not fully develop before birth. During autologous ear reconstruction, the patient’s own rib cartilage is used to create a framework that closely resembles a natural ear. That framework is then placed beneath the skin to form the new ear over multiple stages.
