There's a particular kind of quiet that only shows up when the loudest thing in the yard is wood crackling and water just starting to steam.

There's something a wood-fired sauna does that the electric ones just can't replicate.
It's the smell of the wood. The slow build of heat. The crackle. The fact that you're actually tending a fire to make this happen — it forces you to slow down before you've even stepped inside.

Quick breakdown of how saunas actually differ:
🔥 Wood-fired — 170–195°F, dry heat with the option to add löyly (water on the rocks) for steam. Ritualistic, slower to heat, unbeatable atmosphere. The most traditional.
⚡ Electric — Same 170–190°F range, same dry-heat-with-löyly experience, but on-demand. Convenient, consistent, no fire tending.
🌡️ Infrared — Runs cooler at 120–150°F. Heats your body directly rather than the air. Different sensation entirely — feels like deep sunlight rather than a hot room. Longer sessions (30-45 min).
💨 Steam room — 110–120°F but 100% humidity. Wet heat, different respiratory effect, not technically a sauna in the Finnish sense.
The research everyone cites — the 20-year Finnish cohort study — was specifically on traditional Finnish saunas. 4–7 sessions a week was associated with a 50% lower cardiovascular mortality risk vs. once weekly. Sessions longer than 19 minutes showed the biggest benefit.

Heats like a 10–15 kW electric heater but runs entirely off firewood, so you can use it totally off-grid.
