πŸ“’ We are thrilled to introduce Dr. Robert Kirsner as the WHS President for 2026. A lifelong researcher and clinician from the University of Miami, Dr. Kirsner has been a cornerstone of the wound healing community for over 20 years.

Dr. Kirsner shared his vision for the year ahead, focusing on science-first care, the AI frontier, and mentoring the next generation.

"The main goal is to improve the lives of patients with wounds. Everything we do connects back to that."

In the 1940s, a 40% TBSA burn was often a death sentence. Today, survival rates for 90% TBSA burns are reaching 95%.

What changed? The evolution of fluid resuscitation, early excision, and our understanding of the "Zone of Stasis."

Dr. Shawn Tejiram (MedStar Washington Hospital Center) sat down with Dr. Christina L. Megal (Medical College of Wisconsin) to bridge the training gap for clinicians outside of dedicated burn centers.

Key Clinical Takeaways:

βœ… The 20% Rule: Most adults require formal resuscitation once they cross the 20% TBSA threshold.
βœ… ABA Consensus vs. Parkland: The shift toward lower-volume resuscitation (2 mL vs 4 mL) is saving lives by reducing over-resuscitation complications.
βœ… The Inhalation Threat: Smoke inhalation kills more fire victims than the burns themselves. Screening for carbon monoxide and cyanide toxicity is non-negotiable.
βœ… Depth is Deceptive: Even experienced surgeons only get depth right 75% of the time. Serial evaluation is your best tool.

AI in wound care is moving fast, and the questions clinicians are asking about it are the right ones. Is it safe? Is it accurate? Where does the patient data go?

Our latest article breaks down the fundamentals: how machine learning actually works, what the black box problem means for clinical trust, where AI is already validated in medicine, and the five questions every clinician should ask before adopting an AI tool.

Featuring insights from Dr. Lucian Vlad, Dr. Jordon Gilmore, and Dr. Mohamed El Masry from the WHS Education Committee.

πŸŽ‰ Help us congratulate Shannon Layton, DNP, RN, LICSW-S, NEA-BC, CNL, CNE, CWCN of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, winner of the 2026 SAWC Nurse Scholar award for "Engineering Pressure Injury Prevention in Combat Casualty Evacuation."

Shannon's work tackles one of the toughest environments in wound care, where the margin for error is small, and the stakes are real.

Congratulations, Shannon, and thank you for the work you're doing for patients and for the field.

Nurses, this week is especially for you!

You're the ones at the bedside when things get hard. You notice the small changes that matter, you push for the right care, and you stay with patients through the long stretches of healing that no one else sees. Wound care doesn't work without you.

From all of us at the Wound Healing Society, thank you. We're grateful for everything you do.

Happy National Nurses Week! 🩺

Featuring two of the many standout sessions from the WHS 2026 Annual Meeting!

International Session with ETRS and EWMA featured Katalin Szaszi, MD, Damien Pastor, MD, and Qing Lin, MD, PhD, a great reminder that wound healing science is a global conversation.

Then the Meet the Mentors session, moderated by Jacob Ancira from the Young Professionals Network, brought together Rob Kirsner, MD, Mitch Sanders, PhD, Sundeep Keswani, MD, and Ivan Jozic, PhD for an interactive conversation for early-career researchers and clinicians.

When your opening keynote speaker sequenced DNA in space, you know the week is going to be good. πŸš€

WHS President Susan Volk and incoming WHS President Rob Kirsner welcomed Kate Rubins, PhD, to the SAWC Spring stage at the WHS 2026 Annual Meeting in Charlotte today. Rubins is a microbiologist, retired NASA astronaut, and the first person to ever sequence DNA in space. The kind of speaker who reminds you why pushing the boundaries of science matters in every field.

To quote Dr Volk a veterinary surgeon-scientist who sees complex wounds in practice "We’re all here to make a difference for patients, whether human or veterinary.”

What session are you most excited for this week? πŸ‘‡
