Much like the skin ritual at the Blue Lagoon, our annual Hartman summer vacation has become a ritual of sorts for us. A time to celebrate togetherness, readjust our mindsets, quiet the noise of the daily hustle, explore a different way of living and focus on what really matters in life. Every trip is unique but this year was special.

It was a different kind of trip for sure. We spent time in the city but the majority of the trip found us in nature, connecting with the earth in ways that took us by surprise and found us in awe of God’s creation. The destinations are always impactful but this year we were constantly reminded of how insignificant a lot of the matters that we concern ourselves with every day really are. The vastness of the earth and the beauty of the land make our petty human disagreements, political differences, material possessions and overall “importance” seem notably inconsequential. As we traveled around, effects of climate change were apparent in the change in the glaciers. Reminders of the systems that the earth uses to regenerate land were obvious in the volcanoes. The message was clear. The earth will be okay. With or without humans. From the poorest among us to the billionaires. That made me pause for reflection several times.

In my post 50 year old life it was yet another reminder to focus on those who you love and who love you. Do right by each other and right by the earth. The rest of it will work itself out.

The problem with lip filler is that there is too much bad lip filler out there. For every sausage lipped girl there are ten more walking among you looking like this that you have no idea have been treated.

The keys to successful, unclockable work:

1. An injector, in my case a dermatologist, who has a keen eye, ample experience and good hands.

2. A thorough consultation where the patient is allowed to speak and express their desires.

3. Proper selection of product and precise placement.

4. An honest doctor patient-relationship built on trust so that when it’s time to say no we are aligned.

I have your best interest at heart and I don’t my name on bad work!

Thank you to the chair, Dr Pamela Allen and residents of the University of Oklahoma Dept of Dermatology for hosting me today. I gave a grand rounds talk on managing pigment and conducted an injectable didactic session with the residents hosted by Allergan Aesthetics and gave dinner program last night on the cosmetic consultation, Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm Voluma. The bonus was OU Derm alum, my friend, Dr DiAnne Davis who flew up to help out.

Oklahoma, you are in great hands with this outstanding group of residents led by Dr Allen and program director, Dr Jarad Levin.
