UAB Pathology transfusion medicine fellow Deepak Kumar, M.D., presented two posters, "Evaluating Clinician Utilization of American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) Guidelines in Therapeutic Apheresis Requests" and "Evaluation of Fraction of Cells Remaining (FCR%) Accuracy in Automated RBC Exchange Procedures" at the annual American Society for Apheresis conference in Denver, Colorado last month.

Li’an Williams, a Medical Scientist Training Program student in the laboratory of Lalita Shevde-Samant, Ph.D., Endowed Professor in Experimental Cancer Therapeutics in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, was recently named a recipient of the 2026 UAB O'Neal Cancer Center NextGen Scholar Award.

This predoctoral award, funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama provides two years of support for her research project titled, “Hedgehog Inhibition Programs CD8+ Tissue-Resident Memory T Cells for Sustained Anti-Tumor Immunity in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.”

Shi Wei, M.D., Ph.D., Hazel Gore, M.B.B.S., Endowed Professor in Women’s Health and director of the Division of Women’s Health, was recently recognized by Wiley for his 2024 article “Best practices for achieving consensus in HER2-low expression in breast cancer: current perspectives from practicing pathologists” as a top viewed article in the journal Histopathology.

Wei’s work is among Wiley’s most widely read papers, ranking within the top 10% published by the journal in 2024.

Andrea Comba, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Neuropathology, was recently awarded an $800,000 2026 Breaking Barriers in Cancer Research grant by The V Foundation for Cancer Research for her project, titled, “Dissecting the Tumor-Brain Astrocyte Paracrine Crosstalk to Overcome Glioblastoma Progression”.

Camilla Margaroli Bell, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, and Taru Dutt, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Laboratory Medicine, recently received funding from Insmed for their project, titled, “Microbial determinants and host signatures enable early risk stratification in non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD)”.

The $246,000 grant will run for 18 months.
