Did you know that dental anxiety can start early—even before a child ever sits in the chair?

For some kids, the idea of visiting the dentist brings on a feeling of fear. The unfamiliar sounds, sights, and even the thought of someone looking in their mouth can feel overwhelming. But the good news is that, with a little preparation and reassurance, those fears can often be eased or even prevented.

How to help your child feel more confident about dental visits:

📚 Read kid-friendly books about going to the dentist. Stories with familiar characters can help children understand what to expect in a fun, positive way.
🎭 Play “pretend dentist” at home. Take turns being the dentist and the patient. Let your child use a mirror to “check” your teeth and get used to the idea of someone checking theirs.
🎵 Use calming music or deep breathing to help reduce anxiety before the appointment.

When your child says their tooth hurts, it’s easy to hope it’s just a passing ache—but it’s worth a second look.

Tooth pain is often your child’s way of telling you something isn’t quite right. Even a tiny cavity can grow quickly if left untreated, leading to infections, pain, or even damage to the surrounding teeth and gums.

Watch for complaints of tooth pain or sensitivity, avoiding certain foods (especially hot, cold, or sweet ones), swelling or redness near the gums, and/or bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing.

Prevention matters! Cavities in baby teeth can spread fast—and while those teeth are temporary, the impact on oral development can be lasting. Catching and treating issues early helps protect your child’s comfort, confidence, and future smile.

🪥 Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and scheduling regular dental checkups go a long way. And if something feels off? Trust your gut and check in with your child's dentist.
