Women’s gynecological cancers—such as cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancer—often don’t come with loud warning signs. Many symptoms can be subtle, easily overlooked, or mistaken for everyday discomfort. That’s why regular gynecological checkups are so important.

Routine exams, Pap tests, and recommended screenings can detect changes early—sometimes before cancer even develops. Early detection saves lives. It gives more treatment options, better outcomes, and peace of mind.

Life gets busy. We put our families, our work, and everyone else first. But your health matters too. Taking time for regular checkups isn’t selfish—it’s powerful. It’s an act of self-care, strength, and love for the people who need you here.

DR. WESLEY BURKETT

Dr. Burkett on his inspiration for becoming a physician, what led him to choose gynecologic oncology, and his motivation to work with cancer patients:

“I initially planned to have a career in chemical engineering as it allowed me to use technical skills and knowledge to solve problems. However, in my undergraduate studies, I always felt that there was something lacking. During my sophomore year at the University of Alabama, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a Good Samaritan Clinic. During that time I realized that I wanted to pursue a career that served others while still allowing me to solve complex problems, which directed me to medicine.

I grew up in a house full of brothers and was quite naïve when it came to women’s health and their specific needs. During medical school I gained a greater understanding and appreciation for the physiology and pathology of the female reproductive system. I became fascinated with the surgical treatment of gynecological malignancies, but ultimately, the driving force behind my pursuit of gynecologic oncology was the patients. The women I encountered in medical school and residency were the bravest and most resilient individuals I had ever met.

Each morning I awake knowing I am blessed with the opportunity to care for and serve those who may be experiencing the most challenging trials of their lifetime. It is an honor when a patient trusts me to walk alongside and provide them care. The strength and courage in those suffering from gynecologic malignancies pushes me to provide steadfast, compassionate, and courteous care of the highest quality to each and every patient.”

Dr. Shah on her inspiration for becoming a physician and her motivation to work with cancer patients:

“My grandfather was diagnosed with gastric cancer when I was young. My family spent the last three months of his life with him in India. As a kid, watching my whole family, including my grandfather, come to terms with his illness was a powerfully formative experience. It made me realize the importance of health, and the need for support in illness.

One of my very first patients as an intern in Ob/Gyn was a young woman with an aggressive gynecologic cancer. Her grace, strength and humor in the face of her illness inspired me to care for other women like her.

My patients motivate me. I feel privileged to be part of their journey, and my goal is to do my utmost to provide the highest level of compassionate care.”
