What happens after your first perimenopause and menopause consultation?

You get a plan, and then you fine-tune it. Dr. Alan McCool reviews your symptoms and history, discusses your options, and may begin treatment the same day.

Because every woman responds differently, follow-up visits help adjust the dose or treatment as needed until you find what works for you.

Are normal lab results the end of the conversation? Not necessarily.

Perimenopause and menopause care looks beyond a lab number. Dr. Alan McCool takes time to listen, understand your symptoms, review your history, and use lab work as one piece of the bigger picture.

Because the goal is to treat the patient and their symptoms, not just a lab result.

“Bioidentical” is a term you hear often in hormone therapy — but it doesn’t mean compounded, and it doesn’t automatically mean safer or more natural.

Many FDA-approved hormone therapies, including estradiol patches and gels and micronized progesterone, are bioidentical too.

Compounded hormones can have an important role when a commercially available option doesn’t meet a patient’s needs. Testosterone therapy for women is one example, since there is currently no FDA-approved testosterone product specifically formulated for women in the U.S.

The goal isn’t to choose a treatment because of a marketing term. It’s to choose the right hormone, dose and delivery method for the individual patient.

Do you need to know exactly what’s wrong before making a perimenopause and menopause appointment?

No. You don’t have to walk in with all the answers. If you know something just doesn’t feel right, that’s enough to start the conversation. Dr. Alan McCool takes a deep dive into your symptoms and history to help uncover what may be going on and determine what treatment options may be right for you.

What hormone therapy options are available?

More than you may think. Hormone therapy can include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and in some cases, thyroid support. Bioidentical hormones are also an option and are designed to mimic hormones naturally produced by the body. The right approach depends on your individual needs.

What form of hormone replacement therapy is right for you?

It depends on more than preference. Oral, transdermal, injectable, and pellet options all work differently, and the best fit often comes down to your lifestyle and what you can consistently maintain.

Is hormone therapy really as risky as you’ve heard?

Research has come a long way since the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study that sparked widespread fear. Today, newer research is helping experts better understand the benefits and risks of hormone therapy, with studies exploring its impact on bone health, cardiovascular health, memory, and menopause symptoms.
