Bloomington Meals on Wheels

Bloomington Meals on Wheels Bloomington Meals on Wheels provides medically tailored meals to homebound people who are unable to cook for themselves due to illness, injury or disability

Meals on Wheels has been guided by a single goal since the first known U.S. delivery by a small group of Philadelphia citizens in 1954 – to support our senior neighbors to extend their independence and health as they age. What started as a compassionate idea has grown into one of the largest and most effective social movements in America, currently helping nearly 2.5 million seniors annually in vi

rtually every community in the country. Even the most independent among us, if fortunate to live long enough, may experience a decline in mobility or health that can strip away our independence and diminish the quality of our lives. Great advances in medicine have extended our average life expectancy to a record high of 78.7 years. Living longer means more years spent in the struggles that accompany old age. Add to that the increase in geographic mobility of our families and the result is millions of seniors left behind, hungry and alone. While we all celebrate the increase in lifespan, maintaining health while aging comes with a price. Without support from programs like Meals on Wheels, millions of seniors are forced to prematurely trade their homes for nursing facilities. It costs less to provide a senior Meals on Wheels for an entire year than it costs to spend one day in the hospital or six days in a nursing home. Meals on Wheels saves us all billions of dollars in unnecessary Medicaid and Medicare expenses every year – tax dollars that can be spent in much better ways. Meals on Wheels provides the ability for virtually every community across the country to efficiently and compassionately care for their aging neighbors. At the heart of this community solution are more than two million volunteers who keep the wheels turning in urban, suburban and rural communities across America. Serving up friendship and nutrition in both group settings and through deliveries directly to seniors’ homes, Meals on Wheels is making communities stronger, safer and more self-sufficient. That is something we can all be proud of.

We’re glad to be serving our neighbors in Ellettsville.

Last year, Bloomington Meals on Wheels expanded beyond Bloomington to begin delivering meals in Ellettsville—helping more individuals access regular, home-delivered meals.

Each weekday, clients receive complete, ready-to-eat meals delivered to their door—one hot meal and one cold meal for later—making it easier to stay nourished, independent, and connected at home.

We have room to serve more neighbors in Ellettsville, and we’d love to reach anyone who could benefit.

A quick mid-month reminder: your spare change is already making a difference.

Bloomington Meals on Wheels is honored to be Bloomingfoods Co-op Market’s Positive Change partner this April—and there’s still time to be part of it.

Each time you shop and choose to round up at the register, those small contributions help provide meals, connection, and care to neighbors in our community who rely on us.

It’s a simple act, but together it adds up in a powerful way.

If you’re visiting Bloomingfoods this month, consider rounding up. Thank you for continuing to support our mission—and each other.

There’s more than one way to make a difference—and we’d love to find the one that works for you.

Bloomington Meals on Wheels is currently seeking volunteer drivers, with the greatest need on **Tuesdays and Thursdays**.

You can volunteer on your own and enjoy a quiet, meaningful hour delivering meals and checking in with neighbors.

Prefer something more social? Sign up with a friend and share a route together—a simple way to catch up while giving back.

Looking for a group opportunity? Workplaces, teams, and organizations can “adopt a route” by committing to a specific day each month (for example, the 3rd Tuesday), with different colleagues rotating in. It’s an easy, shared way to support the community.

Most routes take about **60–75 minutes**, and each delivery brings not just a meal, but connection and care to someone who may not see many people that day.

Whether you come on your own, with a friend, or as part of a group, you’re making a real impact.

We’re incredibly grateful to MacKenzie Scott for a $70 million gift to Meals on Wheels America.

At a time when nearly 14 million older adults are worried about having enough to eat and only 1% of philanthropic funding supports senior causes, this investment couldn’t come at a more important moment.

It will help strengthen our nationwide network of local providers so more seniors can be reached, more reliably and sustainably.

A few cents might not seem like much—but together, it can help deliver a meal, a check-in, and a moment of connection to someone who needs it.

This April, Bloomington Meals on Wheels is honored to be Bloomingfoods Co-op Market’s Positive Change partner. When you shop, you can round up your purchase at the register, turning everyday transactions into meaningful support for neighbors in our community.

For many of the individuals we serve, a delivered meal is more than food—it’s a lifeline that helps them remain independent and cared for at home.

If you’re shopping at Bloomingfoods this month, consider rounding up. Those small moments of generosity add up in a big way.

Thank you for being part of a community that shows up for one another.

We were grateful to welcome two volunteers from Bloomington Rotary today, who helped pack 100 meal kits for our Groceries to Go clients. These kits will be distributed over the next 4–5 weeks, helping ensure families have access to reliable, nutritious food.

This effort is made possible through generous grant support from the Indiana Uplands Realtor Association and Psi Iota Xi Sorority.

Pictured here, our Rotary volunteers stand in front of one of three refrigerator/freezers they helped fund in 2025—equipment that continues to expand our capacity to provide fresh and frozen items to the community.

Thank you to our partners and volunteers for making this work possible!

This is what a week of Groceries to Go looks like in action.

Behind every bag is a lot of coordination and care. Orders come in online, by phone, and on paper—each one carefully reviewed so we can meet individual needs. On Monday and Tuesday, our volunteers pack bag after bag, making sure every request is filled accurately. Tomorrow morning, another volunteer will arrive early to add refrigerated and frozen items before deliveries head out.

All of this is made possible by strong organization and leadership. Stephanie, our program manager, keeps everything running smoothly—overseeing the process, coordinating volunteers, and organizing delivery routes so food reaches our clients efficiently.

And this week brought a special bonus: three crates of fresh bananas, a welcome treat for many of the people we serve.

We’re grateful for the teamwork that makes this program possible and proud of the care that goes into every single delivery.
