🪮 What Do Head Lice Actually Look Like? 👀

If you’ve ever looked through your child’s hair and thought, “Wait… is that lice?” — you’re definitely not alone!

Head lice are tiny crawling insects that live close to the scalp. An adult louse is only about 2–3 mm long — roughly the size of a sesame seed — and can be tan to grayish-white. They move quickly, which can make them surprisingly difficult to spot.

And then there are nits (lice eggs). Nits are tiny, oval-shaped eggs that are firmly attached to individual hair shafts, usually close to the scalp. Unlike dandruff or other loose debris, they don’t simply brush away.

🔎 One important tip:
Finding a live crawling louse or nymph is the best way to confirm an active head-lice infestation. If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, a careful head check can save a lot of guessing — and a lot of unnecessary stress.

…Understanding the lice life cycle can make a BIG difference when it comes to getting rid of a lice infestation?

Head lice go through 3️⃣ main stages:

🥚 1. NIT (EGG)
Nits are tiny eggs that are firmly attached to the hair shaft, usually close to the scalp.

🪳 2. NYMPH
When a nit hatches, a tiny immature louse emerges. It goes through several stages while it’s a nymph and as it grows it changes.

🪳 3. ADULT LOUSE
The nymph eventually becomes an adult louse. Adult females can lay multiple (6-10) eggs each day, allowing the cycle to continue.

🔄 AND THAT’S WHY FOLLOW-UP MATTERS!

Successfully dealing with head lice isn’t simply about finding one live louse and removing it. Understanding the different stages—and carefully addressing the eggs and newly hatched lice—is an important part of breaking the cycle.

🪮 WHAT DO HEAD LICE ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE? 🪮

Finding out your child may have head lice can be stressful—but knowing what you’re looking for can make all the difference. ❤️

Head lice go through three stages:

🥚 NIT (EGG) — Tiny, oval/tear-shaped eggs that are firmly attached to the hair shaft.

🪳 NYMPH — A very small (pin-head sized), immature louse that grows through several stages before becoming an adult (a nymph can NOT reproduce).

🪳 ADULT LOUSE — About the size of a sesame seed, with six legs designed for gripping hair. Lice become adults around day 7-10 of life and at that point can reproduce.

🔎 One important tip: Not everything you see in your child’s hair is a nit or a louse. Knowing the difference between lice, nits, dandruff, product buildup, and other debris is an important part of an accurate head check.
