Not every treatment that didn’t “fix it” was a failure.

Physical therapy. Vestibular therapy. Chiropractic care. Medication.

Sometimes people arrive in concussion recovery feeling like they’ve already tried everything.

But here’s the question I want them to consider:

What if some of those treatments actually helped — they just weren’t the entire answer?

Different providers look at the same problem through different lenses. And sometimes the missing piece isn’t finding one treatment that fixes everything.

It’s stepping back far enough to see how the pieces fit together.

You don’t always need to start over.
Sometimes you need to see the bigger picture.

That’s a big part of how we approach concussion recovery at Midwest Concussion Clinic.

“So…we just wait?”

It’s one of the most common questions after a concussion.

And it makes sense.

You’re told to rest.
Take it easy.
Give it time.

Rest absolutely has an important place early after concussion.

But recovery shouldn’t feel like sitting around and hoping something changes.

As recovery progresses, there is another part of the process:

Gradually returning to school.
Gradually returning to work.
Gradually returning to normal activities.

As tolerated.

The challenge is learning where that line is between doing too much and doing not enough—and paying attention to what your body tells you along the way.

You don’t have to have every answer today.

But you should know this:

There is a process.

You don’t have to just sit and hope.

Need somewhere to start?

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

And that conversation belongs in the brain injury community, too.

Brain injury recovery is about more than physical symptoms.

It can affect relationships. Independence. Identity. And how someone sees their future.

Those conversations deserve space, too.

This month, we’re going to talk about it.

Concussion recovery isn’t one system. It’s a machine.

Vision has a job.
The vestibular system has a job.
Your neck has a job.
Sleep has a job.
Your autonomic system has a job.
Your cognitive system has a job.
Your emotional regulation and activity tolerance have jobs too.

And they don’t operate in isolation.

That’s why concussion recovery can become frustrating when you’re treating one piece at a time but nobody is looking at how those pieces are working together.

Sometimes the question isn’t:

“What treatment am I missing?”

It’s:

“How is my entire recovery machine working?”

At Midwest Concussion Clinic, that bigger picture matters.

Breathe.

You don’t have to have concussion recovery figured out today.

You don’t have to know exactly what next week will look like.
You don’t have to understand every symptom.
You don’t have to have the entire plan mapped out.

Sometimes, you just need to know what comes next.

Take that step.

See how it goes.

Adjust when you need to.

Then take the next one.

There may be good days, hard days, and days that don’t make much sense.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing recovery wrong.

Breathe. It’s going to be OK.

Take it one step at a time.

“But you look fine.”

That doesn’t mean you feel fine.

Someone else thinking you should be better by now doesn’t mean your symptoms aren’t real.

Someone else not understanding what you’re experiencing doesn’t mean you’re imagining it.

And someone else’s timeline does not have to become yours.

Don’t let somebody else’s perspective define your recovery.

POV: The ER ruled out the emergency and told you to follow up…

…but nobody actually told you what to do next.

So you call.
You wait.
You try another number.
You wonder if you’re doing enough—or too much.

All while someone you love is still struggling.

You don’t need to have concussion recovery figured out on your own.

There is a process. There can be a path forward.

Sometimes you just need someone to help connect the dots.

Save this or send it to the person trying to figure out what comes next.

“You should be better by now.”

That sentence can do more damage than people realize.

I’ve talked with people navigating long-term concussion recovery who aren’t only frustrated by their symptoms.

They’re exhausted from having to prove those symptoms are real.

To employers.
Family.
Friends.
Even healthcare professionals.

Brain injuries don’t operate on someone else’s timeline.

If someone tells you they’re still struggling, believe them.

A bad night doesn’t have to become a prediction.

Maybe you didn’t sleep well last night.
Maybe today felt harder because of it.
Maybe part of you is already wondering what tonight will look like.

But tonight hasn’t happened yet.

You can prepare.
You can create the environment you need.
You can give yourself permission to rest.

And then you can let tonight be its own night.

Last night doesn’t get to decide how tonight will go.

Prepare. Breathe. Try again.

People see how you look. Not how you feel.

They don’t know the effort it takes to be present.

The symptoms you get for being around.

It’s hard for others to understand because they can’t feel how you feel.
