🎃 Halloween is supposed to be scary because of ghosts, skeletons, and children appearing at your door dressed as inflatable dinosaurs. It is not supposed to be scary because the ingredient label forgot to mention a major allergen.

Crystal Temptations has recalled Chocolatey Eyeballs because the candy contains whey, which comes from milk, but milk was not declared on the label. For families managing milk allergies, that is a much bigger fright than anything hiding in a haunted house.

The recalled candy was sold through Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post in multiple states and includes several package sizes. If you have this candy at home, especially if you already started assembling Halloween treats, check the package before anyone eats it.

The company advises consumers to destroy the affected product and contact Crystal Temptations for a refund. No illnesses had been reported as of August 31, 2026.

And this is exactly why I keep talking about reading labels, checking recalls, and looking at ingredients every single time, even when you have purchased the same type of product before.

👁️ The eyeballs were supposed to be creepy.

🥛 The undeclared milk was not.

Please share this with parents, grandparents, teachers, caregivers, and anyone already stockpiling Halloween candy like October is a competitive sport.

PUBLIC HEALTH PSA | KRATOM REGULATIONS HAVE CHANGED

If you use kratom, or know someone who does, this update matters.

The DEA has placed three newer kratom related compounds into Schedule I. These are mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM 15, and MGM 16. These substances are chemically modified or manufactured derivatives associated with the kratom alkaloid market.

This does not mean traditional botanical kratom leaf has suddenly been federally banned.

Products such as ordinary Red Maeng Da, Green Malay, Bali, and other Mitragyna speciosa leaf powders are a different category from the newly scheduled compounds. Traditional leaf naturally contains mitragynine and very small amounts of 7 hydroxymitragynine, commonly called 7 OH.

The market has changed, however. Consumers can now encounter concentrated extracts, enhanced products, isolated 7 OH products, and chemically modified compounds alongside traditional kratom. A package saying kratom on the front no longer tells you enough about what is actually inside.

If you use kratom, read the entire label. Look for words such as 7 OH, enhanced, extract, alkaloid extract, pseudoindoxyl, MGM 15, or MGM 16. When available, check the batch laboratory report and alkaloid concentrations rather than relying only on a strain name or marketing language.

There is also an ongoing federal regulatory issue involving concentrated 7 OH products, so this is an area worth watching closely.

The goal is not panic. It is informed use. Botanical kratom, concentrated kratom extracts, isolated 7 OH, and synthetic kratom related compounds are not interchangeable products.

Reading Labels in the Age of Fake Food

Food labels matter differently when you are shopping for a child. Food allergies have increased over the last several decades, while the foods filling grocery store shelves are becoming more technologically complicated at the same time. Parents are now navigating reformulated products, unfamiliar ingredient names, precision fermented proteins, changing allergen language, synthetic colors, and marketing terms that do not always mean what we assume they mean. A product can even contain an egg protein made without a chicken and still pose a concern for someone with an egg allergy. Reading Labels in the Age of Fake Food teaches parents how to move past calorie counts and front package advertising so they can understand what is actually in the food they are putting into their children's grocery carts....

PUBLIC HEALTH SAFETY UPDATE

Several medication and injectable product safety alerts have been issued by the FDA since August 25, including recalls involving Baxter and B. Braun products, a hidden prescription drug ingredient in a pain relief product, and an FDA warning involving compounded IV glutathione.

Some of these alerts involve particulate contamination in sterile injectable products. Others involve undeclared ingredients or concerns about ingredient quality and suitability for injection.

Please review the infographic carefully, especially if you use, prepare, dispense, or receive IV medications or compounded products.

Check product names, lot numbers, NDC numbers, and expiration dates when available. If you think you may have an affected product, contact your pharmacist, health care provider, or dispensing facility for guidance.

I will continue monitoring medication recalls, OTC recalls, supplement warnings, ingredient changes, contamination issues, and major FDA safety alerts as part of our public health watch.

Nothing says modern adulthood quite like checking your medication lot number while wondering why the honey aisle suddenly needs a pharmacist. 😅

Today's public health plot twist includes a nationwide recall of one lot of Thyroid Tablets, USP 30 mg because of potential superpotency, plus FDA warnings about honey based sexual enhancement products containing hidden prescription drug ingredients.

So yes, apparently, we now need to read the fine print on both our prescriptions and our romantic condiments.

Jokes aside, this stuff matters. Medication potency problems, hidden ingredients, contamination, and formulation changes can have very real health consequences, especially when people have no idea the product changed.

I am starting to keep a closer watch on medication recalls, OTC recalls, supplement warnings, ingredient changes, contamination issues, and major FDA safety alerts so we can actually know what is happening before it disappears into the internet basement.

Check your bottles. Check your lot numbers. And maybe side eye the mystery honey.

Public health can be weird. Stay informed anyway.

When Solidarity Becomes Conditional

What happens when support for women depends on whether the woman agrees with us? When Solidarity Becomes Conditional examines feminism, political identity, belonging, faith, and the ways women can become divided by ideology. Using psychology, Scripture, and my own theories of dissonance and emotional idolatry, I explore what our treatment of one another may reveal about what we actually believe about dignity, truth, and solidarity....

The People Paying for Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal responsibility sounds responsible until we ask who is actually being required to practice it. Federal and Idaho policy changes are reducing Medicaid and SNAP spending, increasing eligibility and compliance requirements, and shifting more costs onto low income households, while other policies deliver substantial financial gains higher up the income ladder. As a public health educator and mother to disabled children who will need lifelong care, I wanted to look beyond the political slogans and follow the numbers. What I found raises a harder question than whether government is saving money. Is it actually reducing costs, or simply moving them onto the people least able to absorb them?...
