For a lot of autistic adults, the hardest part of getting a job isn’t the job. It’s the interview.

Nick Howard knew that feeling. Before Ford, he found it “difficult to go through the interview process.”

In 2016, Ford teamed up with the Autism Alliance of Michigan to launch Ford Works in Dearborn. Instead of judging candidates mainly on how they come across in an interview, it used a contract-to-hire model: work first, then get hired.

“We really rely on the work that they’ve shown us on site,” said Dr. Niambi Powell, a diversity and inclusion specialist at Ford.

Nick became an IT business analyst. He said it was “quite satisfying to have a position” that uses his skills.
