This is Matera, in Basilicata. It's a UNESCO site. One of the oldest inhabited places on earth...people have lived in these caves and amazing little stone buildings for 9,000 years! I took off my shoes and walked the limestone barefoot, stone worn smooth by every foot that came before mine. The same warm ground, same hot sun. For a few minutes, I felt like I wasn't visiting. I was just one more person who'd stood here, and I felt every one of them before me.

The pictures of the little caves were too dark, but I'll never forget the feeling I had while there.
