“Many people who experience a concussion don’t actually feel any of the symptoms until hours later,” says Daniel Daneshvar, MD, PhD, chief of Brain Injury Rehabilitation.

Dr. Daneshvar explains the signs of delayed concussion symptoms, when to seek medical care, and why early recognition can make a difference in recovery and long-term brain health.

These warning signs are subtle, but they're red flags you need medical attention.

Hannah Strom is about to celebrate her first anniversary as a Rehabilitation Aide at Spaulding, the same place where she recovered after a devastating car crash.

In 2020, Hannah and her College of the Holy Cross rowing team were on a training trip to Florida when their van collided with a truck. She sustained critical injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, and spent months working to regain her strength and independence.

Now, Hannah is helping patients navigate their own recovery journeys with perspective and hope. Joseph Giacino, PhD, director of Neuropsychology, explains that the connectivity between the people helping and the person receiving help is key to recovery.

“Even when I'm having a bad day I'm just, like, proud that I get to be here and share my story and help other people,” Hannah says.

Learn more about Hannah's journey with Lisa Hughes at WBZ / CBS News Boston.

Hannah Strom, who suffered critical injuries in a devastating crash that killed her friend and Holy Cross rowing teammate, is now working to help other patients at Spaulding Rehab Hospital.

At age 62, Posie Mansfield experienced two huge losses within a month. Immediately after the death of her beloved husband, John, she battled an infection from knee replacement surgery, ultimately needing an above-knee amputation.

“I didn’t know what my life would look like after that,” Posie says. She came to Spaulding Rehabilitation for outpatient therapy to get used to her new prosthesis. What she found was a compassionate team and a path back to living her life.

Members of the Spaulding Rehabilitation community show their care and commitment in so many ways. Today, we’re announcing another opportunity to make an impact: participating in Spaulding Day of Giving, a special fundraising effort to support our mission and patients.

Donations help cover important patient support programs, provide meaningful continuing education for clinicians and allow our researchers to pursue promising new ideas—all with the goal of helping people reclaim their lives after injury or illness.

Now through June 2nd, your donation will be DOUBLED, thanks to a $25,000 matching challenge from our friends at the Arbella Insurance Foundation. With your support, Spaulding will continue to advance our mission to bring patients and families strength and hope.

When Sheena Brooks noticed her twin boys, Kaisen (Kase) and Kashton (Kash), now three-years-old, weren’t communicating around age one, she trusted her instincts. Sheena asked questions, pushed for evaluations and advocated for the services they needed for autism spectrum disorder.

That advocacy led her to Spaulding Rehabilitation Boston for speech-language services and occupational therapy, and Spaulding Lexington for an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) evaluation. With support from her care team, Kase and Kash now use AAC devices in therapy and at home, helping them share wants, needs and ideas in ways that work for them.

“They’re learning so fast,” Sheena shares. “Even when it’s not totally clear, you can tell what they’re trying to say.”

Just as important as the tools, Sheena credits the people, including Julia Longacre, OT; Olivia Sullivan, SLP; Emily Dobson, OT; Aliza Grant, SLP; and Megan Conlin, SLP, who knew how to comfort them, meet them where they were and help them build skills through trust and routine. That support also gave Sheena rare “mom moments,” like being able to grab breakfast on her own during appointments.

This week brought a milestone Sheena has been working toward: Kase and Kash started school. They’re eager to learn and to be part of something—and their AAC devices are going with them, so they can keep communicating across settings.

When Caylie McMahon arrived at Spaulding Rehabilitation Boston following spine tumor removal surgery, and her doctors asked what her recovery goals were, she said, “I’m going to run out those doors.” At the time, she couldn’t walk.

This Monday, Caylie will run the Boston Marathon for Spaulding with her best friend and University of Michigan field hockey teammate, Lindsey Stagg—a feat that not long ago felt totally impossible.

“Running the marathon together is something we’ve talked about since Caylie’s recovery,” Lindsey says. “We wanted our turn to give back.”

One of Caylie’s favorite memories from her time at Spaulding was a day of connection with other patients. She had worn a shirt that said “Don’t Skip Leg Day,” with a flamingo on it, prompting one of her physical therapists to bring in an inflatable flamingo costume to make things a little lighter during Caylie’s therapy. Caylie walked around the pediatric floor in the costume all day, visiting younger patients.

“I became the ‘child life specialist’ for the day,” she remembers. “That’s Spaulding. That’s what’s so special about this place and the people who treat patients here—the ability to find joy in difficult circumstances.”

“Spaulding wrapped their arms around me and gave me the strength to rebuild my life.”

Now, Tim Rafferty is giving back, running the Boston Marathon as part of the Race for Rehab Team to support the place that helped him reclaim his life after a stroke.

In our “Why I'm Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what's inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
