Deep winter ❄️
There’s a momentum at the start of a new calendar year towards goal setting. We have this ambition to change habits and add in new routines, but as life unfolds and things happen we will lose focus from time to time or fall off center.
This is inevitable. I started off the new year leading a retreat and left feeling inspired by the community, nature and environment I was surrounded by.
I came home to a snow storm, a sick dog that requires a lot of energy to take care, and a career switch on my partners side.
My approach to all the change and sometimes feeling of being in both a literal and non-literal storm at times is to pause. Instead of doing all the things and intentions I had at the start of the new year I try to do just one and make it as much of a ritual as possible.
A ritual can redirect our focus and where we are putting our energy. Here’s a few ways I’m adding in ritual and sticking to routines that are realistic:
-play coffeehouse music on Spotify. Make your coffee silently and mindfully.
-set a timer for 5 minutes. Sit. Close your eyes. Breathe, repeat affirmations, meditate.
-practice oil massage while watching a happy tv show. Warm shower after.
-supta baddha konasana on your yoga mat or fluffiest rug. Support your legs, close your eyes, lay down. Done - you did yoga!
When you try to do everything perfectly, it’s easy to lose steam, feel exhausted, and end up doing nothing, or be very inconsistent with your routines.
Instead, try doing one thing a day and make it a ritual. Romanticize the little things ✨
