Things I’ve seen as a weight loss doctor that would shock you 👇
1️⃣ 12 years of “just eat less” ended in diabetes 🩸
She reported fatigue, cravings, and weight gain for over a decade. Three doctors gave the same advice: eat less. Nobody investigated further. By the time her blood sugar problems were properly evaluated, she had diabetes. Twelve years of symptoms were treated like a portion-control problem.
2️⃣ Her prescribed diets made things worse 📉
800 calories a day, medically supervised, twice. Extreme restriction caused muscle loss and metabolic adaptation, making weight maintenance harder after each regain. By 45, she was gaining weight on an intake most people would consider a diet. She spent years blaming herself for the consequences of repeated crash dieting.
3️⃣ $40,000 spent, barely any investigation 💸
Points programs, shakes, coaches, “metabolic resets.” Decades of paying to be fixed. When she finally came to me, I asked when anyone had investigated possible medical contributors. Never. Everyone sold her a solution before asking why she was struggling.
4️⃣ The “willpower problem” was her thyroid 🦋
Nine years of exhaustion, weight gain, and feeling cold. Her TSH was considered borderline, so nobody investigated further. Eventually, she was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disease. She spent nine years questioning her discipline when she had a medical condition requiring attention.
5️⃣ Doctors applauded her eating disorder 👏
When restriction became extreme, the scale dropped — and she was praised. “Whatever you’re doing, keep it up.” In a thinner body, the same behaviors might have triggered concern. In hers, they triggered compliments. She got sicker to the sound of applause.
6️⃣ Told to come back when it gets worse 🚪
She asked for help with weight, sleep, and joint pain. BMI: 31. She was told to return if it became a “real problem.” We intervene early for countless health risks. Yet with weight-related health, patients are too often told to wait until complications appear.
